NOWATA, Okla. - Authorities say four people ? including an infant ? have been killed as thunderstorms swept through northeast Oklahoma.
Nowata County Undersheriff Doug Sonenberg tells KSWO-TV (http://www.kswo.com/global/story.asp?s=19489100 ) the infant and two adults were killed Friday when heavy winds destroyed a mobile home. They were found in a creek.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol also reported that Ash Grove, Mo., resident Jimmy King was killed when straight-line winds flipped the semi he was driving onto a cement barrier wall and trapped him inside near Afton.
Troopers say the 70-year-old King was pinned in the wreckage for nearly three hours and died at the scene of massive injuries.
The storms were part of a system that unleashed winds of 25 mph to 35 mph as it moved through the state.

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia?? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday she believed Japan and South Korea were ready to tone down a row over a disputed island chain that has set two close U.S. allies at odds amid heightened regional tensions with China.
Clinton said she met Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak while attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Vladivostok and urged them to step back from confrontation.
"I raised these issues with both of them, urging that their interests really lie in making sure that they lower the temperature and work together in a concerted way to have a calm and restrained approach," Clinton told a news conference.
"I think that's being heard."
The Japan-South Korea dispute flared last month when Lee became the first South Korean leader to set foot on the islands claimed by both countries.
'Interwoven interests': China, US divided on Syria, sea spat, but vow goodwill
Lee's visit and his call for Emperor Akihito to go beyond expressing "deepest regrets" for Japan's 1910-1945 colonial rule triggered a diplomatic tit-for-tat feud, and a rare veiled threat from Japan to flex its economic muscle.
Regional tensions
The dispute between Japan and South Korea over the islands known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan has coincided with a standoff between Japan and China over another island chain that sparked anti-Japanese protests in China last month.
Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas
Noda, accused by the opposition at home of being too soft on territorial disputes, has walked a fine line, fending off criticism while trying to keep the disputes from spinning out of control.
Last month he described South Korea's control of the disputed islands as "illegal occupation" - which drew condemnation from Seoul - but also urged a diplomatic solution to the feud.
Only on NBCNews.com
Tension with China has also risen over the long-running claims to another set of islands, known as the Diaoyu in China and the Senkaku in Japan.
In August, Japan's coast guard detained and deported Chinese activists who sailed from Hong Kong and landed on the islets.
Japanese nationalists land on island claimed by China
The islands are controlled by Japan and owned by a Japanese family.
China is angry about a plan by Noda's government to buy the islands, which are near potentially huge maritime gas fields. Noda decided on the purchase after the governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, a harsh critic of China, proposed his own plan to buy the islands.
Ahead of the APEC summit and a trip by Clinton to Beijing, China warned the United States not to get involved in territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

1. The termites do not sleep. They eat all day long, every single day. This 24/7 operation makes them very efficient in getting rid of decaying wood in the forest, but this activity is deemed very destructive when the food they are foraging on are the wooden parts of the home.
2. The lifespan of the termites can vary. The termite queen can survive anywhere from 20-50 years. The non-reproductive members can survive for only a couple of years. The individual termite colonies have been known to exist for up to one century.
3. There is one king and queen in the termite colony. This pair secretes pheromones that inhibit the reproductive development of their other termite members. The queen lays eggs every 15 seconds.
4. Worker and soldier termites are both male and female. They are usually wingless and majority of them are blind. They are also sterile due to the inhibitory pheromones released by the king and queen termites. There are special soldiers and workers whose function is to care for the eggs and the young.
5. Worker termites are chiefly foragers and feeders so these are the ones that eat and cause destruction to the wooden structures. Another role they play is being the nest builders and repairers. They are also tasked as groomers of other colony members.
6. Soldier termites are mainly the defenders of the colony. The use their big mandibles to decapitate intruders such as ants. For some termite species with no soldier termites, the nymphs and workers act as the defenders of the colony.
7. There are approximately 2,300 termite species worldwide. If all the termites on the planet are weighed, their combined total weight will be far greater than the combined weight of all humans on Earth.
8. Termites have a trophallaxis behavior wherein they feed other colony members through anus-to-mouth (proctodeal) feeding. This behavior also serves a form of communication for them.
9. Termites digest wood through the bacteria and protozoans present in their intestinal tracts. The young termites were able to acquire these digestive microorganisms during feeding time from worker termites.
10. In the United States, there are 41 species of termites identified. The termites are found on all states, except in the state of Alaska.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? Being the last one picked for the team, getting left out of the clique of cool girls, having no one to sit with at lunch. For children, social exclusion can impact everything from emotional well being to academic achievements.
But what does it mean for the kids doing the excluding? Is the cure a one-size-fits-all approach that requires kids to include others, regardless of the situation at hand? Not necessarily, says new research from a professor now at Concordia University.
Unlike previous studies where researchers created hypothetical situations and pre-selected the reasons for exclusion that kids could choose from, the Concordia study asked kids to talk about a time when they excluded a peer.
"Research that looks at kids' own point of view about social exclusion will help us do a better job of supporting their ability to successfully navigate these situations," says Holly Recchia, an assistant professor in Concordia's Department of Education and member of the Centre for Research in Human Development. She is first author of the study, conducted while she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah.
The recent study published in the journal Cognitive Development shows that the experiences of exclusion for those doing the excluding are actually much more diverse than what previous studies have shown, and that a more nuanced approach is needed to encourage social inclusion.
This approach allowed Recchia and her colleagues at the University of Utah to form a broader picture of exclusion. The kids' narratives included not just reasons for exclusion but also why they judged their reasons to be good or bad. For example, "it was a bad reason because now his feelings are hurt" or "it was a good reason because I don't work well with her."
In some cases, children tried to numb their negative feelings about exclusion by ignoring a situation, while in others they spontaneously looked for an alternative to exclusion. In both cases, they had mixed feelings about whether their reasons were good or bad.
"It's the search for alternatives to exclusion that we want to encourage. The fact that children can do this spontaneously reflects children's awareness of their own capacity to behave differently in the future and can be an entry point for intervention," says Recchia.
The study also showed that the experience of exclusion changes as kids got older. Seven year-olds mostly reported uncontrollable circumstances and peer pressure as rea-sons for exclusion, depicting themselves as blameless. As the youngsters reached their teenage years, however, they showed more responsibility when they talked about excluding others, often reporting reasons that were within their control.
This information could help researchers come up with age-specific interventions. In the case of younger kids, the best approach is to help them take responsibility for their actions, which would encourage them to see what they could have done differently.
"The most useful interventions will be the ones that allow kids to weigh different goals, across different kinds of situations," says Recchia. "This flexibility would allow them to handle exclusion in ways that minimize harm to other people while still recognizing their own legitimate desires and perspectives."

Pet bunnies better hop to it. A new study in the British Journal, Veterinary Record notes that, like their owners, their waistlines are expanding at an alarming rate.
The review charted the weight of 41 rabbits over a two-year period and found that about 10 percent of them had packed on so many pounds, they needed to seriously consider salads.? Females were twice as likely as males to be portly, and neutered individuals of both sexes were 5.4 times more likely to be overweight?compared to their virile counterparts.
OK, maybe?the statistics on bunny fatness aren?t quite as ?hare raising? as they are for humans, but they are climbing. In general rising obesity rates in our animal friends is a well established fact. For example, an annual Association for Pet Obesity Prevention survey of more than 500 pets revealed that approximately 53 percent of cats and 55 percent of dogs are now overweight or obese. ?The fact that such an organization exists speaks volumes.
Vets say they are seeing increased obesity in their patients of all species.
?Animals used to have to work hard for a living,? said Dr. Marty Becker, a veterinarian at the North Idaho Animal Hospital in Sandpoint, Idaho. ?Now cats have gone from mousers to moochers. Dogs have gone from guard to lard.?
Besides getting their pets? tails off the couch or out of the hutch, Becker advised owners to help their pets practice the art of portion control. He pointed out that a lot of pet lovers equate food with love, constantly stuffing their fur-and-feathered companions with high-fat snacks and super-sized meals.
?Pets are happy to eat whenever and whatever you give them and when you give them free choice they will eat themselves into the grave,? he said.
Often, owners don?t even realize there?s a problem. Becker said that when asked to gauge their pet?s body size, most owners rate them as ideal even when they obviously sport too much blubber.
As for bunnies, Becker says a far greater percentage of them than the study reported seem to be trading in their carrots for carrot cake and consequently are tipping the scales too far.
?Some of them have so much skin and fat they remind me of a bean bag chair. You can?t even figure out where everything is on them,? he said.
Unlike other kinds of animals, it?s not always easy to tell if your rabbit is roly-poly. According to Becker, they should resemble an hourglass from the top and have a ?wasp waist? from the side. Like other species, they should have just a hint of ?fat covering their ribs. But this doesn?t hold true for all breeds of rabbits.
?An annual checkup is the best way to tell if your rabbit is at its ideal weight,? Becker said.
And while corpulent cottontails may be hilarious in cartoons, Becker warned that in real life they?re like little tubby time bombs, their health ticking away with obesity-related diseases.
Don?t expect them to skip ?Hoppy Hour? on their own either. As Becker notes, ?It?s not like they?re staring down bikini season or desperately trying to squeeze into last year?s jeans.?

In an ideal ecosystem, each species has its own niche ? a different ?job description?: what it does, what it eats, where it sleeps, and more.
But world is often not an ideal place. In many instances, two species may live in the same spot, yet overlap in some of their roles or needs. They may both compete for the same tree-holes or caves for dwelling, or they may eat the same food. It is not necessary for the two species to be aggressive toward each other, but it is likely that one of the species will be more efficient in gaining the resource than the other.
What is the ?loser? to do?
One solution is to move elsewhere. This is called spatial displacement or spatial niche partitioning in ecological jargon. For example, the less competitive species can move some miles down the road, where the more efficient competitor does not live. The place may not be as good ? less food and shelter, for example, but it is good enough for individuals to survive and breed, and for the population to persist for a long period of time.
Perhaps the only place to go is up ? up the slope of the mountain to higher elevation. There may be stronger winds, colder winters, less vegetation to hide in from predators, and less food, but again, it may be good enough for the population to survive. If this persists for a substantial amount of time, natural selection has the opportunity to introduce new adaptations for the new environment, even to the point of evolving a new species, sufficiently different from other populations of the same species that remains in other places.
In some cases, there is nowhere to go. The two species may inhabit an island. This is often the way an invasive species drives a local island species to extinction. Or you may remember the high school experiment in which you placed colonies of two bacterial species in a petri dish, watching as one colony uses the food better, grows faster, and finally completely kills off the other species.
If there is nowhere to go in space, there is a possibility to go somewhere in time. This is called temporal displacement or temporal niche partitioning. The two species remain in the same place, but divvy up the day (or year). The more efficient (or aggressive) species keeps doing what it?s always been doing. But the less efficient species embarks on a new time regime.
There have been a number of observed instances of this. The best documented one is the case of two closely related species of spiny mice inhabiting the ?Evolution Canyon? in Israel. The common spiny mouse (A. cahirinus) is, like most rodents, night-active (nocturnal). The other species, the golden spiny mouse (A. russatus) is actively foraging during the day (diurnal), which is unusual for a rodent. When brought into the laboratory and isolated, monitoring of the circadian rhythms of activity showed that both species are inherently nocturnal. The golden spiny mouse forages during the day as a purely behavioral adaptation ? its genetics drives it to eat at night, but its environment (including the presence of smells of the other species) dictates eating during the day.
Furthermore, as this situation has persisted for long periods of time, the golden spiny mice have evolved changes in their eyes, adapting them better for a diurnal mode of life. The genes and developmental pathways underlying the development of the eyes apparently contained more useful variation that natural selection could act upon than the underlying biological clock which is still ?stuck? in its ancestral condition. This is not optimal ? it would be presumably be better if all of the animal?s biochemical, metabolic, physiological and behavioral functions switched to the daytime regimen, but it is also obviously ?good enough? for the species to survive and thrive.
Today, a new paper in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences (not online yet ? PNAS is legendary for being late at actually publishing their papers at the time embargo lifts, but check the link later) introduces another interesting example of temporal niche partitioning ? and this time it is relevant both for conservation purposes and for human safety.
Researchers from Nepal, in collaboration with Neil Carter and colleagues at the Michigan State University, East Lansing, observed that Chitan National Park in Nepal, one of the 28 world?s tiger reserves large enough to support 25 or more breeding females, has a healthy population of tigers. Yet, the Park is also full of humans, and the interactions between humans and tigers are relatively rare.
Their hypothesis was that tigers and humans may use the space of the large park differently, each species limiting its activities to particular areas of the park. Humans in the park include locals who forage, hunt and collect wood in the park, a growing number of tourists, and the military units which traverse the park in jeeps to ensure safety and prevent poaching. The two species compete for some of the same resources ? mainly space, but to some extent also food. The two species are also afraid of each other and would tend to avoid meeting each other if possible.
To test this, the researchers installed motion-sensitive cameras inside the park as well as just outside of it. What they discovered was that the two species completely overlapped in space, using the same roads and trails. But, humans remained strictly diurnal animals, confounding their activities to the daylight hours and generally avoiding the darkness. On the other hand, tigers, which are normally day-active animals, switched to the night. They triggered the same cameras in the same places, but mainly at times when humans were not around ? during the night.
While being interesting in its own right, as well as a potential model for future research, this study also has practical consequences. It shows that temporal niche partitioning is a strategy that can be employed by tigers, at least as a ?good enough? strategy that can allow the tiger population to survive and thrive over long periods of time. This means that humans and tigers can coexist and use exactly the same spaces. The finding makes it easier to politically ?sell?, set up, fund and run protection areas for tigers as there may be no need to displace the resident humans as long as there is sufficient guard against poaching.

Spanish security forces launched a night operation lasting into the early hours Tuesday to evict 73 immigrants from a tiny islet just off Morocco, officials said.
Spain's Guardia Civil police acted after scores of immigrants landed in the past week on the bare, rocky surface of Isla de Tierra, which lies an easy swim off the beach and is about as long as two football pitches.
Since the uninhabited rock is Spanish sovereign territory, Spain feared it could open a new doorway to immigrants desperate to reach Europe and escape poverty and unrest.
"The Spanish Guardia Civil evicted them," a Spanish interior ministry spokesman said.
"Many of the immigrants did not want to go Morocco, but there was no need to use force nor any troubles," the spokesman said.
Sea conditions had calmed, allowing Spain to move in, he said.
The operation was completed at 4.30 am (0230 GMT).
Before the 73 were evicted, Spain's Guardia Civil had already moved 10 women and children off the islet to the Spanish territory of Melilla, he said.
Melilla and Ceuta are two tiny Spanish exclaves in Morocco, the only land frontier between Africa and Europe.
Rabat considers Ceuta and Melilla, held by Spain since 1580 and 1496, to be "occupied". Madrid refuses any discussion on the subject, which regularly poisons relations between the two nations.
Spain enlisted Morocco's help in the operation, however, fearing that a sprinkling of uninhabited Spanish-owned rocks off the coast off Morocco could become a new destination for immigrants.
"The eviction was handled entirely by the Guardia Civil but obviously together with Morocco because the Guardia Civil handed the immigrants over to their Moroccan counterparts," the Interior Ministry spokesman said.
"The object is not so much to have to act like this but to avoid more immigrants arriving on Spanish rocks," he said.
Photographs in the online editions of Spanish dailies El Pais and El Mundo showed Guardia Civil apparently ferrying the immigrants to land by dinghy.
Immigrants, some in handcuffs, were shown in the hands of police as they waded the final few metres to the beach to waiting Moroccan security forces.
In Rabat, Moroccan authorities said two immigrants had been lightly injured in the operation.
An official of the Moroccan security forces said said some 70 sub-Saharan migrants had been sent back to Morocco and "taken charge of" by the security forces.
According to the official, the immigrants had crossed into Morocco from Algeria and would be expelled.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Monday he was convinced the immigrants' arrival on the islet was coordinated by "mafia who traffic human beings".
The stakes are high for Spain and the European Union because hundreds of people have gathered on the Moroccan side of Ceuta and Melilla hoping for a chance to escape poverty and conflict.
Spanish authorities said Morocco's King Mohammed VI played a decisive role in agreeing to help deal with the immigrants, and they hoped for further cooperation to prevent a repetition.
"The joint response of the Spanish and Moroccan governments, and the European Union, is to say 'That's enough' to those who traffic human beings, endangering the lives of the most vulnerable like pregnant women and young children," the Spanish prefect in Melilla, Abdelmalik El Barkani, told Spanish public radio Tuesday.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? For much of Iraq's youth, sporting blingy makeup, slicked-up hair and skintight jeans is just part of living the teenage dream. But for their elders, it's a nightmare.
A new culture rift is emerging in Iraq, as young women replace shapeless cover-ups with ankle-baring skirts and tight blouses, while men strut around in revealing slacks and spiky haircuts. The relatively skimpy styles have prompted Islamic clerics in at least two Iraqi cities to mobilize the "fashion police" in the name of protecting religious values.
"I see the way they (police) look at me ? they don't like it," said Mayada Hamid, 32, wearing a pink leopard-print headscarf with jeans, a blue blouse and lots of sparkly eyeliner Sunday while shopping at the famous gold market in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kazimiyah.
She rolled her eyes. "It's just suppression." So far, though, there are no reports of the police actually taking action.
This is a conflict playing out across the Arab world, where conservative Islamic societies grapple with the effects of Western influence, especially the most obvious ? the way their young choose to dress.
The violations of old Iraqi norms have grown especially egregious, religious officials say, since the Aug. 20 end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month. In the last two weeks, posters and banners have been hanging along the streets of Kazimiyah, sternly reminding women to wear an abaya ? a long, loose black cloak that covers the body from shoulders to feet.
A similar warning came from Diwaniyah, a Shiite city about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of the capital, where some posters have painted a red X over pictures of women wearing pants. Other banners praise women who keep their hair fully covered beneath a headscarf.
Religious officials speculate young Iraqis got carried away in celebrating the end of Ramadan and now need to be reined in.
"We support personal freedoms, but there are places that have a special status," said Sheik Mazin Saadi, a Shiite cleric from Kazimiyah, home to the double gold-domed shrine that is one of Shiite Islam's holiest sites.
He said the area's residents lobbied Baghdad's local government to ban unveiled women from walking around the neighborhood, including its sprawling open-air market that attracts people from across Iraq.
"The women started to follow to this order," Saadi said.
Government leaders in Baghdad say they've issued no such ban and ordered some of the warning posters removed. The rule "is only for the female visitors who go inside the shrine itself," said Sabar al-Saadi, chairman of the Baghdad provincial council's legal committee. "We think that wearing a veil for women in Iraq is a personal decision."
Muslim women generally wear headscarves or veils in public out of modesty, and female worshippers are required to wear an abaya or other loose robes in shrines and mosques.
But over the last several years, following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and the fall of dictator Saddam Hussein, Western styles have crept into Iraq's fashion palate. Form-fitting clothing, stylish shoes and men's edgy hairstyles are commonly seen on the street. Some younger women have even begun to forgo the hijab, or headscarf.
Their parents ? and their parents' parents ? fear Western influence will drown out Iraq's centuries of culture and respect for religion.
"We as Iraqis do not respect our traditions," said Fadhil Jawad, 65, a gold seller near the Kazimiyah shrine. He estimated his profits have dropped by 10 percent in the last two weeks since authorities posted warnings about improper dress codes at the entrance to the market. He called the financial loss worth the lesson being imposed.
"Legs can be seen, there are low-cut shirts," Jawad lamented. "And all, very, very tight. I think these Iraqis who are wearing these things have come back from Syria, Dubai and Egypt. They probably spent too much time in nightclubs. The families in Kazimiyah are conservative. These young people ? nobody can control them. They should be given freedoms, but they should know their limits."
Several young adults strolling the Kazimiyah gold market on Sunday accused the religious class of trying to pull Iraq back to the dark ages, a sentiment that human rights activist Hana Adwar echoed.
"It is an aggression on the rights of not only religious minorities, but also on secular Muslim women who do not want to wear veils," said Adwar, head of the Baghdad-based Iraqi Hope Association.
Men, too, have been targeted in the fashion flap: Edgy haircuts, tattoos and body piercings have angered religious authorities. But Hassan Mahdi, 22, said he does not care.
"No, hell no, nobody can tell me what to do," said Mahdi, sporting a tight turquoise Adidas tracksuit and a trendy moptop hairdo at the Kazimiyah market.
So far, it appears, the fashion police have stopped short of taking any real steps. Guards at two security checkpoints in Kazimiyah said they have not been ordered to stop daring dressers from entering the market, and 17-year-old Ali Sayeed Abdullah said his slicked-up pompadour didn't prevent him from going into the shrine. "Nobody objected," he said. "But if there is a ban on this, I will change it," referring to his hairstyle.
But some women have been handed tissues at Kazimiyah checkpoints and told to wipe off their makeup before entering the market, said resident Hakima Mahdi, 59.
"This is very good," she said, smiling broadly, sheathed in a black cloak with an extra abaya covering her head. "It's respect to the imam, respect to this holy place."

An alleged land scandal worth more than Rs 500 crore has come to light in Kot village of the district , highlighting an unholy nexus between government officials and the land mafia.
Though the scam took place in 2008-09, the matter has come to light now in the wake of recent correspondence between the authorities in the matter. No one has been made accountable in the case yet though documentary evidence (in possession of The Tribune) shows that the authorities concerned knew about it.
Revenue officials allegedly illegally transferred more than 2,500 acres of shamlat deh land in the village to private persons. The land was characterised as ?gair mumkin pahaar?, which cannot be used for agriculture or residential purposes. This is a hilly stretch of the Aravalis.
Shamlat deh is a common land in a village. A common pool is carved out by taking away a portion of holdings of landowners at the time of the settlement. The original owners and their descendants lose proprietory rights on shamlat deh.
Officials allegedly tampered with the revenue record to create new illegal ?record of rights? pertaining to the land in favour of the descendants of original owners.
Subsequent to the transfers of ownership rights, the beneficiaries sold a major portion of the land as farmhouses. Signficantly, registeries of the sale and purchase of land was allowed by the revenue authorities.
The then patwari allegedly tampered with the records which were vetted and attested by the kanungo and tehsildar concerned. As per the rules, the final authority to allow changes in the record vests with the District Collector.
Significantly, members of the village panchayat also did not raise any objection when the fraud and subsequent mutations in favour of the beneficiaries was enacted.
In this particular case it is possible that the then District Collector and the Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) may not have been taken in the loop by lower officials. However, they will have a lot to explain in this case .
Balraj Singh,Deputy Commissioner, Faridabad, who took charge recently, said, ?I am seized of the matter and action will be taken against those found guilty.? When specifically asked as to who would be made accountable in the case, he did not give a direct reply.
The extent of the scam can be ascertained from the fact that the present market value of the land in Kot village is more than Rs 20 lakh per acre.
A new dimension was added to the scam when the Director, Consolidation of Holding, Haryana, issued a controversial notification in December last year to conduct ?consolidation? of 3,184 acres, including the chunk forming gair mumkin pahaar, in Kot. Subsequently, it was annulled by the Director-General, Consolidation of Holding, Haryana, vide his August 23 order.
In the order, the Director-General reasoned, ?The aims and objects of the Consolidation Act were to consolidate landholdings for the prevention of the fragmentation of holdings and for the reservation of land for common purpose of the village.?
The order further said the object of the Consolidation Act would be ?defeated? in case gair mumkin pahaar is included in the scheme of consolidation. It also reads, ?The consolidation would wrongly benefit certain influential outsider-purchasers of gair mumkin pahaar.?
