Dan is part of new research that shows?baboons?are able to pick up the first step in reading ? identifying recurring patterns and determining which four-letter combinations are words and which are just gobbledygook.

The study shows that reading's early steps are far more instinctive than scientists first thought and it also indicates that non-human primates may be smarter than we give them credit for.

"They've got the hang of this thing," said Jonathan Grainger, a French scientist and lead author of the research.

Baboons?and other monkeys are good pattern finders and what they are doing may be what we first do in recognizing words.

It's still a far cry from real reading. They don't understand what these words mean, and are just breaking them down into parts, said Grainger, a cognitive psychologist at the Aix-Marseille University in France.

In 300,000 tests, the six?baboons?distinguished between real and fake words about three-out-of-four times, according to the study published in Thursday's journal Science.

The 4-year-old Dan, the star of the bunch and about the equivalent age of a human teenager, got 80 percent of the words right and learned 308 four-letter words.

The?baboons?are rewarded with food when they press the right spot on the screen: A blue plus sign for bogus combos or a green oval for real words.

Even though the experiments were conducted in France, the researchers used English words because it is the language of science, Grainger said.

The key is that these animals not only learned by trial and error which letter combinations were correct, but they also noticed which letters tend to go together to form real words, such as SH but not FX, said Grainger. So even when new words were sprung on them, they did a better job at figuring out which were real.

Grainger said a pre-existing capacity in the brain may allow them to recognize patterns and objects, and perhaps that's how we humans also first learn to read.

The study's results were called "extraordinarily exciting" by another language researcher, psychology professor Stanislas Dehaene at the College of France, who wasn't part of this study. He said Grainger's finding makes sense. Dehaene's earlier work says a distinct part of the brain visually recognizes the forms of words. The new work indicates this is also likely in a non-human primate.

This new study also tells us a lot about our distant primate relatives.

"They have shown repeatedly amazing cognitive abilities," said study co-author Joel Fagot, a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research.

Bill Hopkins, a professor of psychology at the Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta, isn't surprised.

"We tend to underestimate what their capacities are," said Hopkins, who wasn't part of the French research team. "Non-human primates are really specialized in the visual domain and this is an example of that."

This raises interesting questions about how the complex primate mind works without language or what we think of as language, Hopkins said. While we use language to solve problems in our heads, such as deciphering words, it seems that?baboons?use a "remarkably sophisticated" method to attack problems without language, he said.

Key to the success of the experiment was a change in the testing technique, the researchers said. Thebaboons?weren't put in the computer stations and forced to take the test. Instead, they could choose when they wanted to work, going to one of the 10 computer booths at any time, even in the middle of the night.

The most ambitious?baboons?test 3,000 times a day; the laziest only 400.

The advantage of this type of experiment setup, which can be considered more humane, is that researchers get far more trials in a shorter time period, he said.

"They come because they want to," Fagot said. "What do they want? They want some food. They want to solve some task."

[Editorial] Can Sony?s Digital Imaging Division Restore Profits?

As many of you have probably already read, Sony Corp announced that it is cutting 10,000 jobs, which translates to 6% of its global workforce. Sony has been struggling with negative profits for four straight years, mainly due to its floundering television division. But what does this mean for Sony?s camera division? With the television sector likely getting the main force of the cuts, will Sony rely on growth in their digital imaging division to make up for the numbers?

Sony lost a lot of money in televisions last year. Their sales and operating revenue (to external customers) was down to 238,194 million yen from 416,914 yen last year, a staggering 42.9% loss over 12 months. Though Sony will likely cut jobs from across the company, I am willing to bet a majority of those jobs will be in the televisions division. Those folks just don?t seem to be able to develop the kind of technology they need to compete at a cost effective price point. If they could, Sony wouldn?t be in this mess right now.

But as camera folks, what happens in to their television division is not really the concern for us. Let?s instead focus on what Sony is touting to be a big winner: their camera division.

Sony was particularly proud of the successful expansion into the mirrorless camera market with the Alpha NEX series. In their 2011 annual report, they bragged about their now 15% share in the global market for interchangeable lens digital cameras, up 5% from fiscal year 2009. They then make the promise to ?increase their lineup of interchangeable lens digital cameras and take decisive steps aimed at cultivating this new market category.? They even highlight the NEX series as a major point in their ?Focus Areas For Growth? segment of their Annual Report.

Sony?s choice to cultivate the expansion of their non-reflex cameras is not just based on their sales. According to the Camera and Imaging Products Association, 2011 saw ?non-reflex? cameras take a 23.2% share of the total interchangeable lens camera market. That?s huge, as this means mirrorless cameras have jumped yet another 10% in market share since 2010. However, about 37% of the total global market for these cameras was sold in Japan. Sure, success in Japan is great, but a product requires steady and even global distribution to hold on to success. With such a large chunk of share based solely in Japan, the question can be asked: ?Do mirrorless cameras have a future??

In Sony?s case, they are banking on it. Their DSLR sales haven?t been able to compete with Nikon or Canon. In fact, I just checked Amazon.com, and the only Sony product to make their Top 50 Digital SLR Cameras clocks in at a resounding 41st place. Almost sad really. That means the core of their sales business has to come from their Cyber-Shot series, their Alpha NEX series, and their video camera division. Their cyber-shot business seems to be doing moderately well, shipping 24 million units in 2011, which is up 3 million units from the previous fiscal year. Their video camera division holds a strong 43% market share, with 5.2 million units sold worldwide. They plan to expand their Handycam line and introduce 3D models that, they promise, will deliver better picture and sound quality as well as introduce a model featuring a built-in projector function.

That?s all well and good, but we need to look at the hard facts: The second most losing area of Sony?s consumer products division (and their second most losing overall) behind Televisions, was their Digital Imaging division. They only sold 120,179 million yen worth of digital cameras, down from 188,477 million yen from the previous year. That?s a 36.2% drop, which is not far from their struggling televisions division. Oh, did I mention that for as many years as televisions have been struggling, so to has the Digital Imaging division? Ouch.

To lose that much money, yet still claim success and growth in both Cyber Shots and video cameras leads me to believe their biggest losses were in mirrorless and DSLRs. If Sony is going to try and make a real run in this area, they?re going to have to do better. Obviously a 15% market share in mirrorless cameras isn?t enough to make up for their feeble DSLR share (which, I might add, remained conspicuously absent from their 2011 annual report).

Of course, Sony is also relying on their tablet sales (which I can tell you right now are nothing like Apple?s iPad sales) and phone sales. However, you can?t deny the size of the Digital Imaging division. It?s the second largest piece of Consumer Products, the largest segment of their company. They have to be relying on future camera success.

How to grow and serve kumquats

This past December, I (Anne Moore, a gardener) harvested my first fruit from a seed-grown tree. It's a very unattractive tree. It is somewhat leafy at the bottom on the original growth. This past summer it decided to shoot up a trunk with leaves and one little fruit at the top of its four feet. Somehow, I missed the flowering phase.

The tree (and I use the term loosely) is at least 10 years old. It grows in part shade in a very infertile area. It has been evergreen its whole life and maybe if I paid more attention to it, it would be an attractive little tree. It has developed very long, wicked thorns all along its trunk. The fruit is very small, all seeds, with a smooth citrus-flavored sweet skin, just like a kumquat with no pulp.

Grow indoors or outside

Kumquats, even though they appear to be citrus, were moved to the genus Fortunella in 1915, according to Purdue University. If you purchase a young grafted tree, you won?t have to wait ten years or more for it to bear fruit and the fruit will be edible.

If you live in USDA Zones 8-9 (sheltered spot in zone 7), you can plant it outdoors in a sunny spot. Otherwise, grow it in a sunny window indoors and full sun outdoors during the summer months. The roots should never dry out but they also cannot be in standing water. Use a slow-release fertilizer.

To raise the humidity indoors, mist it daily or raise it up on pebbles in a saucer of water. You can enjoy these little "oranges" as decorations or in recipes, like the one from Linda, next.

Kumquats, a childhood favorite

As a small child, I (Linda Weiss, a chef) loved kumquats. My grandmother could never understand why I liked the citrusy, sweet rind, that held bitter flesh, and I can hear her saying, just like yesterday, ?of all things,? as I picked up a kumquat and took two bites to finish it.

Fast forward to almost 60 years later, and I still like them -- except that I eat them a couple of different ways now, but mostly preserved. The preserving of kumquats is easy, and you will be surprised at what a fresh flavor this tiny little orange fruit can bring to so many different foods, such as herb-roasted chicken, a simple piece of toast, or just a few tablespoons added to the side of a vegetable plate.

Kumquat Preserves

?2 pounds kumquats

4 cups sugar

2 lemon slices (about ? -inch thick)

4 cups water

Wash the kumquats thoroughly. Prick each one with a fork. Put them in a pan large enough to cover them with boiling water, and simmer them for 25 to 30 minutes or until they are tender. Drain.

Combine the sugar, lemon slices, and the 4 cups of water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Add the kumquats and boil gently for 25 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to stand, covered loosely, overnight (or all day if you start in the morning), so that the fruit will plump.

Take out the lemon slices and discard. Place the kumquat mixture back on the stove and bring to a boil.

Skim the kumquats from the syrup with a slotted spoon, and put them in hot sterilized half-pint jars. Continue to boil the syrup until it reaches 220 degrees F on a candy thermometer. This may take 8 to 10 minutes. Pour the boiling syrup over the kumquats, covering them to 1/4-inch from the top of each jar. Clean rims, and seal at once. Refrigerate or freeze. If freezing, leave one-inch space between the fruit and the top of the jar. Cool before freezing. Makes 2 to 3 pints, depending on the size of the fruit.

The use of tablets in agriculture, as opposed to smartphones, is just now starting to take off.

Another factor that has led to the more rapid growth of mAgriculture in developing countries is the fact that in these countries, mobile phones may be the only computing and communications technology that is available. In contrast to American agricultural publications, African and Asian newsletters and magazines have lots of stories about the use of mobile phones in agriculture all through the 2000s. I?m not convinced that conservatives from the bishops on down have fully thought through the theological and moral aspects of what they?re saying. Case in point from Matt Bliss:

Lydia Hannah, an adopted person, objected to the characterization of adopted children as ?sociologically unstable.?

To me, it shows the whole wrongheadedness of taking the so-called defense of marriage to ideological extremes. It sounds as if the presentation should have ended at the start of the eighth inning. as one might expect, when the presenters went off-script they found themselves deep into it. More sensible talk from young Mr Bliss:

The first three-quarters of the presentation were really good. They talked about what is marriage and how marriage helps us as a society. Then it started going downhill when they started talking about single parents and adopted kids. They didn?t directly say it, but they implied that kids who are adopted or live with single parents are less than kids with two parents of the opposite sex. They implied that a ?normal? family is the best family.

In a world where one or both parents can die before?their children are reared to adulthood, we will always?suffer from loss in such situations. We also live in a nation where a half-million children live in group homes, foster homes, and institutions because their parents are incapable of caring for them. Uttering slurs against adoption is not the way to go. And besides, if this is such a flawed situation, where are the national workshops on adoption, orphans, widowed parents with children, and what-all? Why does this become such a Big Issue when millions of gays want to overturn the heteroscxual applecart a few thousand people of the same sex want hospital visits and legal protections?

The save-marriage movement betrays itself as anti-homosexual bigotry for no other evidence than few enough of?these people cared when it was about orphaned or abandoned children. It has been the parishes on the front lines helping families coping with the loss of a father or mother. The hermeneutic of subtraction reveals this movement as a sham. Save marraige? What about promoting real marriage movements like ME? What about sending all engaged couples on EE? When was the last time these people offered?or even attended?a marriage enrichment experience at the parish, a retreat house, or at a diocesan location?

The so-called ?normal? family also has its own challenges these days: pornography on the home computers, materialism in the culture, a federal government that insists on separating families because of non-sensical military adventurism in southwest Asia, not to mention in immigration policy and practice. Throw in the stresses of modern jobs, an economy in the toilet, and the uncertainty of the future ? and I think we have the right to know why some Catholics and many bishops are out there attacking people who, mostly, don?t even consider themselves part of the flock. Stay home, bishops, and put resources into Catholic families and Catholic couples. If you want to reach out, start flooding government agencies with Catholic couples who have completed home studies. Please: don?t show your ignorance on adoption. And don?t send lackeys to insult the young.

My assessment from yesterday on this thread on disinvite stands, Archbishop Nienstadt and Bishop McManus and others have failed us not because they?re pushing and doing too much. This is a failure in ministry because they simply don?t do enough.
