Western DuPage Special Recreation Association Nets Awards for ...

Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) was recently honored with several awards from the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) and Illinois Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA).

WDSRA was named a Distinguished Accredited Park and Recreation Agency at the IAPD/IPRA Soaring to New Heights Conference and was presented the award at the organization?s annual conference. WDSRA joins 20 other Park and Recreation Agencies to receive the accredited status.

First named a Distinguished Agency back in 2002 and then recertified in 2008, WDSRA was the first SRA to receive this designation. In 2009, the Distinguished Agency Program became an accredited program known as Distinguished Park and Recreation Accreditation Program. WDSRA was evaluated in June of 2011 by a team of Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) and Illinois Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA) members reviewing policies and procedures in 6 different areas, legal, general management, finance and business operations, facilities and parks, personnel and recreation services.

Additionally, WDSRA Marketing/PR Manager Sherry Manschot won the IAPD/IPRA Writing Contest in the Marketing Category. The award was presented at a recent board meeting by a member of the IAPD/IPRA Joint Editorial Committee (JEC). Manschot was also presented with the prestigious Director?s award from the Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section, a section of the IPRA. That award was also presented at the IPRA?s annual conference.

WDSRA serves more than 4,500 children and adults with special needs through over 1,500 programs, trips, and special events each year. Additionally, WDSRA achieves over 13,000 participations through programs, inclusion services, community education and fundraising events. WDSRA offers Special Olympics and adapted sports programs, dance and art programs, as well as social clubs and camps.

In addition, WDSRA provides a full range of inclusion services for any program offered through a participating park district. As a service to the community at large, they offer disability awareness programs that educate groups, such as schools, about living with a variety of disabilities.

WDSRA is a nationally acclaimed, not-for-profit organization and a cooperative extension of nine park districts including Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield.
