business insurance-Ellsworth | Gibbor Green

business insurance Ellsworth ME The number of drivers on the road increases each and every year. As this number increases, the possibility of accidents also increases. The difference between a little aggravation and large obstacle can be the car insurance you have purchased. But why do you need to own insurance and exactly how much should you purchase? Your insurance may be able to pay for the expenses from a car crash ranging from hospital bills to replacement costs. Your state or province certainly requires some type of auto insurance. Electing to drive without insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: This type of insurance coverage can pay for the damage that you are responsible for. These damages might include personal injury, and property damage. It can also cover your defense and court costs if you are sued. Recommended, higher levels of liability insurance can be purchased that take care of more events than the stripped-down, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you or other people in your car, regardless of who was at fault in the accident. It is sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage. It may also pay for lost wages, replacement of services and funeral costs. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This coverage can be purchased in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may be responsible. All necessary medical or funeral expenses will be covered under this type of coverage. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Protect your car from all non-collision damages when you buy this type of coverage. This can include protection from burglary, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: Many drivers are ignoring the law by driving without purchasing the right amount of insurance. This insurance will protect you if one of these drivers hit you. Under-Insured Motorist: There are other drivers who have liability insurance that can?t pay for all the expenses they are responsible for. Under-insured motorist coverage protects you from those drivers. Other types of coverage, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available. Your auto insurance payments varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: * Which policies you select * The type of the car you drive * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Don?t wait around to buy auto insurance; you shouldn?t drive a car without it. Review your needs, do your research , and with the support of your insurance agent, choose the option that fits you best.

Crown Ambassador 2012 released

Crown Ambassador 2012 released

Carlton & United Breweries have launched their fifth vintage Crown Ambassador Reserve Lager with a lavish dinner at Melbourne?s Luminare restaurant.

The 2012 release of Ambassador, which will be available from November 5, provides a bolder front-up hop aroma and bitterness compared to previous vintages. This increased presence of the Galaxy hop character represents the fingerprints of new lead brewer, Tully Hadley, who took the Ambassador reins following the retirement of John Cozens earlier this?year.

The launch event featured a three course menu matched to three vintages of Ambassador, constructed by food critic and TV personality Matt Preston. Describing himself as a ?beer and spirits guy rather than a wine snob?, Preston admitted to tasting Ambassador for the first time only two weeks prior, over a game of cards at?1am.

The exclusive dinner, marking the first public tasting of 2012 Ambassador, was attended by a number of Preston?s Channel 10 colleagues, as well as restaurant owners, notable Melbourne figures, media and CUB and SABMiller staff. The design of the occasion supported the desired image of elegance and luxury that is used to market the limited release beer, with 7000 individually numbered bottles released each?year.

The young vintages of Crown Ambassador Reserve Lager essentially obtain their luxury element only from the high price tag when compared to many of the finely-crafted high-alcohol craft beers now available on the local market. However, five years into the project, Ambassador is now displaying its value with excellent ageing quality by developing a silky smooth texture with rich complexity.

Preston?s fine dining menu began with an entr?e of caramelised pork belly with a golden raisin pur?e Belgian endive, snow pea leaves, pear and fennel salad paired to the 2009 Ambassador. The beer?s second vintage has matured into a silky smooth palate and full malt body with layers of caramel sweetness, making it delightfully easy to drink. This well-aged beer would seem more appropriate as a nightcap to end a meal, but it matched very well to the sweetness of the pork belly and?pear.

The 2012 Ambassador followed with the main course of a smoked beef fillet with rosemary and black truffle potato gratin, crispy fried carrot and Crown Ambassador jus. Although not yet displaying the balance of aged vintages, the newest Ambassador is bright yet delicate in the mouth, currently dominated by resiness hop character. The slightest note of bubblegum is present at the back of the aroma, which may be a hint of vanilla imparted by the oak barrel component of this blended beer.

Last year?s Ambassador vintage is still quiet sharp and will also benefit from more time to mellow. It did not quite have the silky palate or full-bodied balance it needed to match the delightfully rich dessert of Valhrona chocolate and prune torte topped with a butterscotch brittle and cr?me fraiche, yet 2011 Ambassador remains an enjoyable part of this beer?s journey.

When asked about the hefty greenness displayed by the new Ambassador, Tully Hadley praised the versatility of the Australia?s Galaxy hop.

?Galaxy is amazing, I?ve brewed with it in Cascade Pure where it gives a real tropical, lychee fruitiness to it, but then Stone & Wood use it and it?s very much like fruit?salad.?

?In this Ambassador it?s a bit more of a pine aroma which might be from the use of the green hops that were really resinous.?

?Looking back at previous vintages, one of the things I wanted to do this year was to lift the bitterness to balance it really nicely, but also to up the hop character in general for both aroma and flavour, and that carries through in the bitterness,? Tully explained.

?I want the bitterness to still be present in a couple of years?time.?

?This year we picked the hops on a Tuesday afternoon. If we had waited until the Wednesday morning it would have been too late. They were just ready to burst, full of essential oils and alpha acids, which I think has added to the?brew.?

Not surprisingly, the CUB employees present at the dinner were keen to discuss the recent ?good news story? of Victoria Bitter returning to its former 4.9 per cent alcohol by volume formula. However, they were very coy about discussing the reported under-performance Crown Lager on tap, relying on the premium beer?s draught presence in limited high end locations, such as the restaurants of 4 and 5 star hotels.

Tully said that there is more to just the change in VB?s alcohol percentage that has been occupying their time at the Abbotsford brewery. All the beers across CUB?s core range have been adjusted to remove the use of preservatives.

The directive came from new owners SABMiller. Tully recalled that their initial message was ?get the beer right first and sort out the marketing later.?

Tully suggested that the CUB brewers have compensated for the removal of preservatives from their core lagers by improving and paying more attention to brewing techniques and efficiencies in order to maintain the existing shelf life of their beers. The differences should be unnoticeable to drinkers except maybe for a slight reduction in hangovers, which are often attributed to the use of various preserving agents. Ultimately, it seems that there has been much more recent adjustment to CUB beers as opposed to simply returning VB to its original formula.

As for Ambassador, it remains the same beer of previous vintages but this year it has been crafted with an 8% blend of an oaked?batch.

?Not everyone?s going to drink it in the next couple of months, so the challenge is brewing a beer that will last. The oak barrel is very subtle on the nose but it will build with age,? said?Tully.

Planning for next year?s vintage will begin in a couple of months time. Tully noted that anything is possible for future Ambassador brews. So far each vintage has been built on the same base beer, with subtle variations delivered by the use of fresh hops and the blending ratios with oaked and aged batches. However, he is not ruling out the potential to experiment with different yeasts, hops and malt profiles should that enhance the luxury of Crown Ambassador.

The hot tip from Tully regarding his first Crown Ambassador vintage: ?I think it will be amazing by the middle of next?year.?

James Davidson was a guest at the 2012 Crown Ambassador dinner.

Cover Letter: Sales Letter or Not? - Quintessential Resumes and ...

Concluding a series a series of excerpts by Susan Ireland from this article. As we did in our cover-letter white paper not long ago, Ireland examines some conventional wisdom about cover letters.

Conventional Wisdom: Make your cover letter a sales letter.

Ireland?s response: Yes and no. You resume cover letter is a sales letter in the sense that it pitches you to the recruiter or hiring manager. It should also paint a picture of you at the job interview by showing that you know what the company does, what value you offer, and what you?d like to discuss in person. While saying this, your cover letter should reveal your professional personality so the reader gets a sense of you ? the person he?ll be sitting with in the interview.
But an over-the-top sales letter is not appropriate for most job objectives. It may work very well for sales, marketing, and promotion jobs where a ?salesy? approach is expected and valued. But that same sales-letter approach will likely fall like a rock off a cliff for an IT professional, accountant, school teacher, and frankly most occupations not involved with sales.

Experts call for increased neonatal inclusion in pediatric drug trials

Cincinnati, OH, October 25, 2012 -- Clinical drug trials are a vital part of pharmaceutical manufacturers gaining approval for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A Commentary scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics assesses the issues surrounding the lack of clinical trials on medications used by children, most notably neonates, and how drug manufacturers and academic researchers could work together to create clinical trials that would benefit this underrepresented population.

Henry Akinibi, MD, and colleagues from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati believe that the lack of clinical drug trials for neonates is caused by many factors, including additional regulatory requirements, no adult equivalents of many neonatal diseases to gain a starting point, lack of financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies, and the unique physiology of neonates. As a result, many doctors prescribe adult-approved drugs for children in off-label and unapproved uses; unfortunately, without clinical trials, the safety of this practice often is unknown and could place neonates at risk for unknown complications.

Throughout the years, the federal government has created legislation in an attempt to gather more information on the medications prescribed for children; the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act and the Pediatric Research Equity Act were made permanent by Congress in August 2012. These types of legislation have led to over 400 pediatric drug-labeling changes since 1998. Because neonates were addressed in only 6% of these changes, they continue to be at risk for receiving ineffective medications, incorrect dosages, and developing unanticipated complications. Although these new laws now include a requirement that pharmaceutical manufacturers submit plans for pediatric studies at certain times in the drug-approval process (e.g., Phase 2), they do not require a neonatal inclusion. This is important because drawing conclusions from the results of drug trials in older children and applying them to neonates is not ideal and continues to leave this population at risk.

Indisputably, unstudied medications for neonates have played a major role in the positive outcomes and increased viability for infants born prematurely, and, overall, recent laws have resulted in great strides in pediatric trials. However, the neonatal population still lags in inclusion. Of over 120,000 studies at the National Institutes of Health clinical trials repository, only 0.6% involves neonates; in total, only 3.4% of all registered pediatric studies involve neonates. Open communication and cooperative sharing between industry and academics are integral components to ensuring that drugs are safe and effective for all populations. According to the first author of the article, Jason R. Wiles MD, "Inclusion of neonatologists and neonatal pharmacologists in study designs, and early in the drug development process, would make data generated from such studies more relevant and useful."

Napoli, Cannavaro face match-fixing charge

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:48 a.m. ET Oct. 26, 2012

ROME (AP) - Serie A title-contender Napoli and team captain Paolo Cannavaro have been ordered by the Italian soccer federation to face match-fixing allegations.

Current and former Napoli players Gianluca Grava and Matteo Gianello and former Napoli assistant Silvio Giusti were also called in for questioning over the Sampdoria-Napoli match in May, 2010.

Gianello and Giusti are accused of sports fraud, while Cannavaro and Grava are accused of failing to report fixing. Cannavaro is the younger brother of former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

Several others were also called in for questioning over alleged fixing in the lower-division Portogruaro-Crotone match in May, 2011.

Napoli trails Serie A leader Juventus by three points, as the southern club chases its first title since Diego Maradona helped secure the championship in 1987 and 1990.

How chips, PCs, services companies are faring

Companies providing computers, components, services and related software have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. The reports come as consumers shift their spending toward tablets and a weak global economy curbs corporate spending on computers. Here's a look at how selected companies are faring.

? Oct. 10: Research firms IDC and Gartner say worldwide shipments of PCs fell sharply in the third quarter, as some consumers spent their electronics dollars on smartphones and tablets and others held off for a new version of Windows. Gartner also estimates that Chinese PC maker Lenovo Group Ltd. outsold Hewlett-Packard Co. for the first time to become the world's largest seller of PCs. IDC still had HP on top.

? Oct. 16: Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says the usual bounce in sales due to the holiday season is likely to be cut in half this year, even though Microsoft is launching a new operating system that it says will get consumers excited about PCs again. In the quarter that just ended, Intel's revenue from PC chips fell 8 percent from a year ago, in line with reports from IDC and Gartner.

IBM Corp. says revenue slipped below Wall Street's expectations, much of it because of the economic deterioration in Europe and other parts of the world, which resulted in weakened international currencies and translated into fewer dollars on sales made abroad. IBM management also raised the specter of slowing demand for the company's technology-consulting services and business-software products as corporate customers become more cautious and debt-laden government agencies deal with budget cuts.

? Oct. 18: Microsoft Corp. says net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers ? and as PC sales in general took a dive. Excluding the deferrals, revenue for the Windows division fell 9 percent from a year ago, roughly in line with the decline in global PC shipments in the third quarter reported by research firms Gartner and IDC.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it will cut nearly 1,800 jobs, about 15 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year in order to reduce spending in the face of dwindling sales. CEO Rory Read says trends that are reshaping the PC industry are happening faster than the company expected. The job cuts were announced as AMD reported that its revenue tumbled 25 percent in its just-ended quarter.

SanDisk Corp. reports lower net income and revenue for the third quarter as the company sold fewer of its memory chips to gadget makers. But the results surpassed Wall Street's expectations, and SanDisk says it is gaining market share from competitors.

? Monday: Texas Instruments Inc. CEO Rich Templeton says the chipmaker executed well in the quarter "even though the economy and semiconductor market remained weak and likely will get weaker in the fourth quarter." Texas Instruments says it expects fourth-quarter earnings of 23 cents to 31 cents per share. That's below the 36 cents per share expected by analysts.

Hard drive maker Western Digital Corp. says first-quarter net income more than doubled from a year ago, helped by the March acquisition of a data storage subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. CEO John Coyne says a weak economy is "dampening near term demand" but said he remains confident in the company's prospects over the long term.

? Tuesday: Apple refreshes its lineup of Mac computers and introduces a 13-inch MacBook Pro model with a sharper, Retina display. It announces new iMacs for later this year, along with a faster, full-sized iPad tablet and a smaller one called the iPad Mini.

Xerox Corp. says net income fell 12 percent in the third quarter as growth in the company's services business only partly offset declines in the sale of equipment, supplies and related products.

? Wednesday: EMC Corp. says its net income and revenue grew at a slower pace in the third quarter as the uncertain economy led to more cautious spending by customers for its data storage equipment. The results fell short of Wall Street's expectations.

Business software maker SAP AG says third-quarter profit fell because of a large one-time gain booked then, but the company raises its sales outlook for the year and says its business in cloud computing was growing fast.

| Review | Two Cheers for Anarchism by James C. Scott | The Coffin ...

There is nothing like election time to reveal the ignorance of educated Americans. This is especially the case in the current election, when many misguided people under the conservative persuasion mistakenly understand the ideological battle between Obama and Romney as one of socialism versus democracy. Yet when asked to define socialism, it?s doubtful that anyone on the right or the left could give you a correct answer. Similar to communism, socialism simply means that the state owns wealth and the means of production. Things like universal health-care and higher tax rates aren?t socialist, they are just standard features of any developed democratic nation. As President Obama does not have a political agenda that includes a government take-over of the means of production, the word socialism is clearly a widely misunderstood and incorrectly used term.

Yet anarchism is even more misunderstood than socialism. For most people that consider themselves educated, the word anarchy has connotations of destruction and chaos. (And indeed, while mayhem has nothing to do with the actual anarchist ideology, we just might get to experience such a crude form of anarchy if Romney is elected and allowed to systematically deconstruct America?s social system. But Romney?s proposed attack on government isn?t really anarchism either.) Thankfully, Yale professor James C. Scott and Princeton Press have recently published Two Cheers for Anarchism, an easy to read book that will help illuminate the concept of anarchism for anyone under misconceptions about the sophisticated ideology of anarchy.

Rather than attempt to convince readers to join their local anarchist party, Scott?s goal in writing Two Cheers for Anarchism is to make ?a case for a sort of anarchist squint? by relating anecdotes that demonstrate the fundamental ideas of anarchism. In fact, the founders and figures of classic anarchist ideology are mostly absent, which would be like writing a book about communism without talking about Marx, Lenin, or Mao. Scott completely neglects contemporary anarchists like Noam Chomsky and influential anarchists like Emma Goldman. He references Mikhail Bakunin, the father of anarchism, only in the prologue, quoting the apt insight that ?freedom without socialism is privilege and injustice; socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality.? Similarly, it?s only in the prologue that Scott mentions Proudhoun, who defines anarchism as ?cooperation with hierarchy or state rule.? Instead of writing like an academic, Scott ingeniously employs the use of what he calls ?fragments??vignettes that illustrate the ?anarchist tolerance for confusion and improvisation that accompanies social learning, and confidence in spontaneous cooperation and reciprocity.? To further stress his unorthodox approach, Scott introduces many chapters with quotes from Lao Tzu?s Tao te Ching, a work from the 6th century B.C. considered to contain the earliest anarchist themes.

One of the most interesting ideas in Two Cheers for Anarchism is that of ?anarchist calisthenics,? which is exercising individual freedom through small, seemingly insignificant acts of disobedience. For example, while working in East Germany back in the 80s, Scott was fascinated while watching dozens of German pedestrians wait several minutes at intersections for a green light, rather than jaywalk, even when it was clear that no car was approaching. Scott links this example of blind obedience to the law with the difficulty Germans had in not disobeying the immoral and unjust laws of the fascist government that occupied their country in the 30s and 40s. Scott argues that if people practice breaking a trivial law when it is logical to do so, then people would have a much easier time breaking serious laws when they know it is wrong to obey those laws. In order to not sound too much like an anarchist, Scott clarifies that the ?willingness to break the law is not to sow chaos, but to instate a more just legal order.?

Much of Two Cheers for Anarchism supports the notion that all great political reform has been achieved through massive civil disobedience, not through organized institutional changes; Scott?s main premise is that government policy is actually influenced by thousands of small, insignificant and anonymous acts of insubordination. Rather than open confrontation through political or physical means, these anonymous acts of defiance include desertion rather than mutiny, foot-dragging rather than striking, and, in cases where there is severe inequality, poaching, sabotage, and arson. These acts naturally encourage a ?complicity of silence? on both sides; they escape notice in the media or in political discussions, but because politicians see such acts as precursors to an all-out rebellion, these small acts have big influence. In other words, ?one need not have an actual conspiracy to achieve the practical effects of a conspiracy.?

Scott quickly moves on from encouraging insubordination to show that anarchism is actually about an unstructured, localized, spontaneous approach to public policy. Order from central planning is deceptive; it works on paper, but not in reality. The standardized practices of big agriculture have proven destructive, with un-rotated crops sucking nutrients from the soil and being vulnerable to disease. Agribusiness is furthermore ?diabolical? in how it has transformed free, independent chicken farmers into closely monitored assembly-line workers who have no freedom over their own operations due to the amount of debt they?ve acquired in following the directions of large chicken corporations. Planned cities with sharply defined residential, commercial, and industrial zoning laws are undesirable for their sterility. Schools that focus on standardized tests produce unintelligent students, as well as corrupt teachers who must focus on meeting required test scores in order to stay employed. There are less traffic accidents in intersections without traffic lights. Universities that grant tenure and hire faculty based on the amount of books published or number of articles cited have replaced the quality of education with a quantitative measurement. The rise of the assembly line in factories effectively eliminated artisanal-craft knowledge. In case after case, Scott shows that ?it is erroneous to equate visual order with working order.? Governments and institutions only have standardization because it is easy to measure and compare, even though what is measurable is often valueless; for example, you can?t measure the things that actually matter to people, like happiness, kindness, maturity, or love. In Einstein?s words, ?Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted, counts.?

The underlying fact that policy makers unfortunately ignore is that a lack of structure facilitates spontaneous adaptation and growth, while standardized static policies are destructive for a creative and progressive society. The overall point of Two Cheers for Anarchism seems to be that our policy makers are misguided; in the interest of production we create social structures that are not only inefficient but detrimental to a successful and sustainable society. Scott also reminds us that the reliance on standardization and quantification fosters the manipulation of data, resulting in such things as the 2008 financial collapse, the deterioration of our education system, and the destruction of our environment. The solution to the world?s problems, and perhaps humanity?s salvation, lies not in adjusting our political process, but in adjusting our way of thinking by putting on ?anarchist glasses.?

It would be too ironic to say that Two Cheers for Anarchism is weakened by its lack of structure, and that it would have benefited from further elaboration and cohesion, but that?s the truth. Nevertheless, we should be grateful that this book was published during election time. Anyone who desires to see a more democratic, just, and equal world should consider Scott?s conclusion that ?great emancipatory gains for human freedom have not been the result of orderly, institution procedures but of disorderly, unpredictable, spontaneous action cracking open the social order from below.?

This means that anyone who has Hope and believes in Change shouldn?t support ineffectual institutions like the Democratic Party, but should rather support true engines of social progress such as the anarchistic Occupy movement.

Fight off Your Yeast Infection the Natural Way! | Gnet Health and ...

Yeast infections can manifest in a number of different forms, and will affect most of us at some stage in our lives, whether we are male or female.

Commonly the fungus Candida, which exists naturally on and in the body, will cause these infections; Your Candida population is usually kept in check by your immune system, and by bacteria in your body that compete for the same food source. But every now and again, that balance is upset, sometimes by the use of antibiotics that kill your friendly bacteria, sometimes by hormonal changes or the use of other medications; the causes are numerous. Now, the Candida population is able to explode, bringing with it all sort of nasty side effects that aggravate the body wherever it is breeding.

Like all fungus, Candida loves conditions that are warm and moist; so the areas most likely to suffer are the mouth, the genitals, the underarms, or nappy areas. Rarely, but of much greater concern, the infection can spread throughout the body, and cause serious damage to internal organs. People whose immune systems are under stress will find that they become more susceptible to infections.

For women, yeast infections are commonly seen in the form of vaginal thrush, which 75% of all women will suffer from at some point in their life. The symptoms involve itching and burning sensations, coupled with a white discharge. Wearing tight or synthetic clothing around the crotch will worsen vaginal thrush, since it serves to create an even cozier environment for the Candida to breed in!

If this all sounds familiar to you, then you know how demoralizing and inconvenient thrush infections can be. You may also have noticed, if you have suffered recurrently, that over-the-counter fungicides no longer work as well as they used to. This is because if you suffer repeatedly, the fungus can start to breed resistant strains, which can withstand an attack from a fungicide. So what is the next step? Below are some tips on how to overcome your yeast infection when the conventional medications give up!

  1. Try a Homeopathic Remedy!
Homeopathy uses natural remedies that have been tried and tested over generations of people. They can help ease the uncomfortable symptoms of a yeast infection using natural anesthetics, and when fungicides stop working, they may just come at the Candida like a curve ball! We recommend trying Yeastrol, which is one of the most popular anti-fungal homeopathic remedies available on the market.
  1. Help out your Friendly Intestinal Flora!
These are the bacteria in your gut that help keep Candida in check. Try eating Probiotic yoghurts, which are packed full of these friendly bacteria.

If you are suffering from vaginal thrush, you can also try applying the yoghurt directly to the infected areas; messy perhaps, but studies show that it?s effective!

  1. Cut down on Sugars!
This includes alcohol too! The Candida in your systems feeds off sugars, so every time you eat them, they eat them too. Try cutting back on sugary drinks and foods, and limit your carbohydrate intake.
  1. Wear Cotton Underwear!
These allow your skin to breathe, and mean the Candida won?t have such warm, moist conditions to breed in. Also, try really hard to minimize the irritation of the infected areas; that means resisting the itch, using un-perfumed bath soaps, and avoiding very hot baths; if the skin is irritated, more Candida will be able to enter the superficial layers of your skin, and your problem will only be exacerbated.
  1. Keep an Eye on Your Condition!
And get to the doctor if it persists for longer than a week. Not only that, but if you start suffering from a fever or vomiting, abdominal pains, or a severe worsening of your condition, then seek medical help right away.

QuickBooks Premier Edition 2013

Should you drop the $400 it'll cost you to upgrade to this year's small business accounting software of choice, QuickBooks Premier Edition 2013 ? Tricky question. If you're already using QuickBooks (or any other small business accounting system), you know that the pace of change in the field has slowed over the last several years. The growth of these products has become evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They've come a long way in the two decades or so since they were first available and affordable on personal computers, meaning that you have about all of the tools you need to process your receivables and payables, run payroll and track inventory, and create reports.

But there are a couple of major areas where these applications can improve. They can move more of their operations into the cloud to take advantage of what the internet offers and/or improve their aging, crowded work screens. Intuit is working on the first by continuing to build out QuickBooks Online. And a long overdue revamp of the desktop program's user interface is the highlight of QuickBooks 2013 (all versions, though we reviewed Premier). Whether you upgrade to this new edition depends on how old your current version is and the importance of usability to your accounting staff. The program's actual functional enhancements don't offer enough incentive to spend a few hundred dollars to update your software, but the other enhancements well might.

Unfamiliar With QuickBooks?
If you've never used QuickBooks or read much about it, here's what you need to know. For many years, it's won our Editors' Choice award. Though it has some formidable competition like Sage 50 U.S. (formerly Peachtree Accounting), I've recommended it above the others for several reasons, including:

? Its simplicity and usability. 20 years of growth had taken a toll on QuickBooks' interface, but it was still the easiest overall to learn and master.
? Its blend of features. Intuit's family of desktop applications offered a set of tools that would meet the needs of many small businesses, but it wasn't so feature-packed that it was overwhelming.
? Its extensibility. The Intuit App Center has grown to include hundreds of add-ons that integrate with QuickBooks and provided specialized functionality.

QuickBooks is a double-entry accounting system, which basically means that it follows standard bookkeeping rules. You don't have to worry about that because the program takes care of the debits and credits in the background. You'll do your work much as you do on paper or via another software program.

Numerous Lifelines
When you have questions, as you will, you can choose from a variety of support options. QuickBooks has a fairly comprehensive built-in help system, but it's slower and more troublesome to use than the one that appeared in long-ago versions. There's an online troubleshooting database and community forums, and many accounting professionals provide assistance; you can find a local expert on the website.

Be aware, too, that QuickBooks' long history and countless upgrades and revisions have made it a very complex piece of software. If you have hardware that's more than a couple years old, you may experience slow operation at times.

Accounts, Records, Transactions and Reports
QuickBooks may organize things differently than you do now, but it accomplishes the same tasks. It sets up a Chart of Accounts for you based on your business type and helps you create bank and credit card accounts. You can still hand-write checks if you want and enter them in the program's registers, but it's easier to do so within the software. QuickBooks accommodates online banking and merchant accounts, so you can accept credit cards and electronic checks.

Information about your customers, vendors and employees is stored in individual records. When you begin entering financial data on forms like invoices and purchase orders, these records will be used to automatically populate fields on your transaction forms. Record and transaction information will also be used to create the reports you'll need to run. QuickBooks contains dozens of ready-made templates and allows you to customize your output and/or export it into Excel. Because of the close integration throughout the system, you should be able to avoid duplicate data entry.

The transaction forms and other screens where you actually do your work look like their paper counterparts in many cases. You use them to do the same accounting chores you're used to doing, like sending invoices, estimates and purchase orders; entering and paying bills; running payroll and dispatching paychecks, filings and taxes; and tracking inventory. QuickBooks uses a lot of the same conventions that you're familiar with from other Windows software, like icons, pull-down lists and menus.

Slimming Down
Intuit had three goals for the new versions of QuickBooks. The company wanted to make it, "...easy to use, easy to understand and easy to look at." QuickBooks 2013 achieves all three of those goals with its totally redesigned interface. The difference between 2012 and 2013 is startling. You can now move quickly to the most commonly-used functions from the opening view.

The new home screen contains three basic components by default. The old interactive process map that illustrates your workflow remains, but the icons are larger and more spread out. All of the extra navigational links that had been tacked on over the years are gone, absorbed by other, hidden parts of the program.

Standard file menus are still there, but there's a new vertical navigation panel that contains a customizable list of shortcuts to QuickBooks functions on top. Directly below are links to reminders and alerts; account balances; your favorite reports; and open windows. And the lower pane provides access to additional Intuit services. You can display the toolbar to the left, across the top, or not at all.

Cycling facing long climb to regain credibility

GENEVA (AP) ? Mired in a crisis caused by the Lance Armstrong doping affair, cycling faces a long uphill trek to regain credibility.

Still, the head of the sport's governing body said cycling can succeed despite the doubts of many, including anti-doping leaders who on Tuesday called for Armstrong-era officials to be removed.

"By the decisions we have taken it has given us the moral authority," UCI President Pat McQuaid told The Associated Press after his group accepted the sanctions that stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and all other race results since August 1998.

Skeptics insist that the UCI protected Armstrong from scrutiny for many years, and was reluctantly forced to disown him by a devastating report published this month by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Across 1,000 pages of evidence, the report detailed how Armstrong's teams used and trafficked banned drugs ? coercing some teammates into the conspiracy ? to dominate the Tour from 1999-2005.

"We really had no option but to make the decision we made," McQuaid said.

McQuaid's denunciation Monday that Armstrong "deserves to be forgotten in cycling" was surprisingly strong after the UCI had previously backed Armstrong's failed legal fight to deny USADA jurisdiction in the case.

"We haven't tried to find a way to defend an icon in our sport ? we've accepted reality," he told the AP. "We've accepted the facts and the facts are there. I'm a pragmatic person and I believe no matter how bad the situation might be, you take the decision you have to take and move forward from there.

"The sport has to take what it can from this and use it as a means to convince athletes that there's no future in doping," McQuaid said.

A day after Armstrong was stripped of his Tour titles, former teammate Steffen Kjaergaard acknowledged using banned performance-enhancing drugs. The 39-year-old Norwegian, who has since retired, said Tuesday he had used EPO and cortisone. He was immediately suspended from his job at the Norwegian Cycling Federation.

But five-time Tour champion Miguel Indurain said he believes in Armstrong, saying the entire case was "bizarre" since Armstong never tested positive for doping.

"It is strange they take away his Tours because of the testimonies of some teammates," said Indurain, a Spaniard who won the Tour from 1991-95.

Armstrong has lost a slew of sponsors over the scandal, and even Dutch bank Rabobank has pulled out as a team sponsor. However, some Tour de France backers said Tuesday they would stick with the race.

"We don't sponsor a team or an individual, we sponsor a sporting event that each year attracts great public enthusiasm," said Pierre Baillot, the spokesman of French bank LCL, which sponsors the race leader's yellow jersey. "The wider public knows how to draw a distinction" between the jersey and the wearer.

On Friday, the future of cycling will be shaped at a meeting of the governing body's management committee. On the agenda: how to revise race results, including the 2000 Olympic time trial in which Armstrong won bronze; possible efforts to recoup Armstrong's prize money; handling riders' doping confessions; and restructuring the sport to guard against doping conspiracies.

There is also to be discussion of a commission that could offer limited amnesty to riders and officials confessing to doping.

"Why did this happen?" asked McQuaid, who became UCI president two months after Armstrong's seventh Tour victory. "What is it about our sport that forces athletes to do what they are doing? If we can make changes in the structure which weakens the possibility of athletes and teams getting into doping programs, we will bring those forward."

McQuaid suggested that some ideas he plans to share Friday will not be popular, with speculation that nine-rider teams at the Tour could be reduced.

"They may be unpalatable for the teams and the riders but we will bring them forward," he said.

What is unpalatable to the World Anti-Doping Agency is that McQuaid's predecessor, Hein Verbruggen, can attend the board meeting as honorary president.

Verbruggen led world cycling from 1991-2005 and has been sharply criticized for presiding over an era of rampant doping. Though the USADA report expressed concern at some of UCI's conduct, it stopped short of repeating unproven allegations relating to Armstrong's urine sample with suspicious levels of EPO at the 2001 Tour of Switzerland and his donations to the UCI totaling $125,000.

On Tuesday, the head of WADA ? which has long had fractious relations with cycling ? said the UCI had to "take the blinkers off" and examine its past behavior by ousting those officials who were in charge during the Armstrong era.

"I don't think there's any credibility if they don't do that," WADA President John Fahey said.

McQuaid defended his UCI mentor at a news conference Monday.

"There is nothing in the USADA report which implicated Mr. Verbruggen in any wrongdoing," said the Irish official, who stated he would not resign and will likely stand for a third four-year presidential term next September.

After five hours of defending his organization, McQuaid directed his most pointed frustration at former Armstrong teammates Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton, whose whistleblower testimony exposed the depth of cheating in the U.S. Postal Service team and cycling's entrenched doping culture.

"They are not heroes," said McQuaid, explaining that he was angered by riders who repeatedly denied doping during their careers and who tried to make money from their confessions.

The outburst conflicted with his earlier statement that "the UCI is listening" and welcomed riders telling what they knew about doping.

"Pat McQuaid's comments expose the hypocrisy of his leadership," Hamilton said in a statement to the BBC. "Instead of seizing an opportunity to instill hope for the next generation of cyclists, he continues to point fingers, shift blame and attack those who speak out, tactics that are no longer effective. Pat McQuaid has no place in cycling."

Asked by the AP who represented a brighter future for cycling, McQuaid pointed to riders such as Vincenzo Nibali of Italy, Geraint Thomas of Britain and Tejay van Garderen of the U.S., winner of the best young rider classification at the 2012 Tour.

"They are looking at what is happening (in the Armstrong case) and they are saying to themselves, 'I never want to be involved in anything like this. I never want to be near anything like this,'" McQuaid said. "They are the riders who will bring our sport forward."

Better Gaming Bureau ? The Fastest Growing Video Game ...

If you?ve played Borderlands 2 for any significant amount of time, you already know that Pandora is a very dangerous place. If a crazed business man isn?t trying to kill you at one moment, a rabid elemental creature definitely will be. But if you thought that the creatures and characters of Pandora were all you had to worry about in the world of Borderlands 2, think again as a new infection being passed around the community is killing off the game?s Xbox 360 and PC population, one Vault Hunter at a time.

if you?ve ever played Borderlands 2 online with strangers, or a friend who has played with strangers, there is an ever increasing chance that your character?s savefile has been infected with what is being called ?Graveyard,? it seems. What is ?Graveyard?, exactly? I?ll let GameFAQs community member and avid Borderlands 2 player Dranaxscas explain it in his own words.

What is graveyard.sav? What does this have to do with me?
When you get hit by the glitch that turns your save into graveyard.sav, upon entering FFYL and then subsequently dying for whatever reason, you will never respawn. You die and go into a free roam camera. If you try to load another character, dashboard, restart your xbox, etc, your save data is completely gone and there is no hope of recovering it at that point, as it is renamed graveyard.sav and is missing the majority of the data it once had.

What?! How did I get this?
The glitch originated with the modding community and may or may not have been accidental. It spread from there, and it passes from the infected player to all other players in the game with said infected player. At this point, it?s a terrible chain, and chances are it passed to you through some randoms.

He goes on to state that it CAN be fixed if you are able to put your save file on a USB drive and send it to one of the many modders who should be able to remove the ?Graveyard? infection and get you back up and running. I personally wouldn?t recommend this, as it could also put your personal info saved on your Xbox or PC in jeopardy.

So what should you do? First of all, check your Borderlands 2 save files on your Xbox 360 or PC. If you see your save file listed as ?GRAVEYARD.SAV?, you?re ****ed and either have to take the risk of sending your file to a modder, or just start a new character now and hope and pray for a patch to come that fixes this later.

The modding community has always been strong in Borderlands 2 despite the game and system?s lack of native support for it. And while mods usually bring us harmless guns that just obliterate everything you shoot with it, this one is the first one to obliterate people?s characters.

Gearbox has yet to release any statement regarding the matter and one has to wonder if they will ever acknowledge it as it is a result of people hacking the game. As stated before, right now it only effects XBox 360 and PC gamers, with no reports of it on the PS3? yet. But if you play Borderlands 2, do yourself a favor and back up any save file you have right now, because you never know when it could hit you. We?ll keep you updated with any new info as it comes.?
