Like it or not, pressure is on Kentucky to win

(AP) ? The pressure is everywhere for Kentucky to win a national title. Except in the locker room.

At least that's what the Wildcats (36-2) keep saying as they head into their national semifinal showdown with Louisville (30-9) on Saturday night in New Orleans.

Though coach John Calipari says that every game other teams play against Kentucky is a "Super Bowl," the Wildcats have carried weighty expectations since the start of the season that they would cut down the nets here.

Then there's the small-town college experience of basketball-crazed Lexington, which senior Darius Miller likens to a fishbowl, and a state that follows the team's every move. Add in that Kentucky hasn't won a title since 1998 and the 'Cats have to go through archrival Louisville to win a title, and the pressure just builds.

"You want to do it for these fans. I've never in my life been in a place that they're so passionate, but yet they've got a soft heart. They're not mean and nasty. They're not 'The Miserables.' They just want this thing to go well," Calipari said this week. "And they worry. They can't sleep at night. I sleep like a baby.

"These people are up going, 'I can't sleep.' So you want to do something for them. But the reality of it is, we can't even get into all that. This is about our team playing at their best. We'll deal with the result. As long as we're our best, we're prepared to go battle and we're aggressive and we're at our best and we all look at each other and say, 'We couldn't have played much better,' we'll take the result from there and we'll deal with it."

But any result other than a victory would be a failure in the eyes of Kentucky fans, who saw their team ascend to the top of the polls in the middle of the year and stay there, earning the top seed in the NCAA tournament. Calipari's most talented team, as many as six players could be in the NBA next season, is expected to seize the prize that has eluded the program in recent NCAA tournaments.

"We are used to it by now," freshman Marquis Teague said. "We are pretty much used to all of this, the fans and the media. Things like that are normal for us."

Last year, Kentucky reached this stage of the tournament before shooting itself out of a title chance in a one-point loss to Connecticut. The same thing happened against West Virginia in the regional finals in Calipari's first year leading the Wildcats.

"This year it's just basketball. We've been doing this our whole lives," Miller said. "Little uptight last year, 'Need to win this, have to win this.' This year it's not like that at all.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves last year. We're trying to learn from that mistake."

AP National Player of the Year Anthony Davis agreed that they've stayed loose by sticking together and only focusing on the game, not the hoopla of this Final Four run.

"There's no pressure on us," he said. "Just go out there and play ball, have fun."

That means little has changed in their pregame schedule. While the other Final Four teams have had added opportunities to stroll Bourbon Street and be tempted by all the Big Easy has to offer, Kentucky only took one trip into the French Quarter on the first night, Miller said.

It's been all business since.

"We've prepared the same way like we have for any game," Kentucky forward Kyle Wiltjer said. "We've done the same thing every game. It's just another game for us."

A loss to Louisville might turn some of Big Blue Nation into "The Miserables" quickly, but guard Doron Lamb insists the level of intensity they faced has been constant since arriving in Lexington this season.

"We've had pressure on us since the summertime. Everybody expected us to go undefeated this whole season. We've got pressure on us. Everybody expects us to win every game by a lot of points," Lamb said. "But we're not feeling pressure right now. We know everybody's expecting us to win the whole thing, so we've just got to go out there and play harder than everybody else and prove to everybody we're the best team in the country."

Plukka Founder Joanne Ooi On Merging Manufacturing And Group Buying

Screen shot 2012-03-30 at 9.20.41 AMWe've seen a lot of group buying services cross the home page here at TechCrunch, and almost all of them have one thing in common: they sell you the stuff that has been marked down, and couldn't be sold at the time intended. But a new startup called Plukka, which is an e-commerce site focused on high-end designer jewelry, is going in an entirely different direction when it comes to group buying. I had the opportunity to sit down with founder Joanne Ooi, who stressed that the most important part of the Plukka equation is something she refers to as "just-in-time" manufacturing.

Lenovo ThinkStation D20

The Lenovo ThinkStation D20 is one of those systems that you know you will need. Are you building components for weapons systems that directly related to national defense? Are you in the editing and mastering stage of a $250 million Hollywood movie? Do you need to produce blueprints for an eight-lane automobile bridge spanning a major river? If you answer yes to one of these, you are probably in the market for a workstation desktop like the D20. If your job is eliminating pimples from a photo of a Kardashian, this system is overkill.

Design and Features
The D20 is a full-sized professional grade workstation, and it probably won't win any beauty awards. It's a humungous black metal and plastic tower, about 17 by 8 by 24 inches (HWD), so you'll have to clear up a bunch of space either under or on top of your work surface for the system. The D20 has a two-inch tall handle on the top, which will help your IT move the system around if necessary. The front panel is perforated with a hexagonal pattern, in order to aid airflow through the system. The tower is totally air-cooled, which reduces complexity over a liquid-cooled system. What's notable is even though the system is air-cooled, it is very quiet during use. The system's fans will only spin up fast during the boot process and if the CPU or GPU is really taxed. You'd think that a dual-CPU system would be loud because of the extra cooling fans, but during most work sessions the system was as quiet as a run-of-the-mill business desktop PC.

The system's massive size has a purpose: It can accommodate plenty of upgrades. The system we reviewed came with a 450GB 15,000rpm SAS drive, plus you can add up to four more SAS or SATA hard drives. The system can connect to industry-standard FireWire 400 and eSATA external drives in case you're dealing with hand-transported data. The system has a 2GB Nvidia Quadro graphics card in it, but you can add one more, plus another lower-end graphics card for multi-monitor support (there are two PCIe x16 slots, but one is only wired for PCIe x4). There's also space for another optical drive, plus nine memory DIMM slots. The system we reviewed came with 12GB of memory, but the system can handle 48GB total. Essentially, this system is overbuilt for most people who aren't aerospace engineers, trying to map the human genome, or designing bridges for government contractors.

The system is ISV certified to work with a plethora of software packages, including packages like AutoCad and PRO/Engineer. These certifications (and the underlying hardware and drivers) are important, since the users of a system like this may be designing the leading edge of an airplane wing or a strut on a bridge being built over a canyon. If you get an error on an ultra-high end gaming system you might have a missed frame while shooting an enemy in a virtual world. If a pro workstation user has an undetected error on a project, it could lead to a bus crashing into a canyon. This is one of the many reasons why professional workstations are more expensive than high-end consumer desktops.

Performance
Lenovo ThinkStation D20 The ThinkStation D20 exudes high-end performance. Its two Xeon processors, 12GB of memory, SAS hard drive, and Quadro 4000 graphics card mean that it will take any task you ask of it, and finish it quickly. The "X" in the X5687 processor's model number means that is can dynamically overclock itself like other Intel processors. The D20 finishes the Handbrake video encode test in a quick 1:19 and the Photoshop CS5 test in 3:09. This is over a minute faster than the last two dual-CPU workstations we've tested, the Editors' Choice?winning Lenovo ThinkStation C20 ($4,618 direct, 4 stars) and Apple Mac Pro ($3,499 list, 3.5 stars). Both workstations use "e" class Xeons that don't have Turbo. The wins extend to Cinebench R11.5, a simulation of 3D rendering in software (which is multi-core friendly). The D20 has the highest 12.65 score, compared to the 9.53 for the C20 and 8.62 for the Mac Pro. Granted, the Mac Pro uses a slower Xeon processor and is almost two years old at this point, but the Mac Pro is still being sold in this exact configuration. Remember what I said about gaming PCs? Well, the EC-winning Falcon Northwest Mach V ($6,899 direct, 4.5 stars) is able to perform better than the workstations shown here, but then again none of its components are ISV certified. The Falcon is faster than the D20, but it's not that much faster. You can't discount the Falcon's consumer nature. Think of the Falcon as a speed demon that you bring out to play, and the Lenovo as a precision instrument that also happens to be fast.

The Lenovo ThinkStation D20 is an interesting beast. It's something you buy to fulfill a specific need, rather than a system you can choose among a lineup. The closest system to the D20 in scope that we've seen recently is the Apple Mac Pro. Both systems are dual CPU, with plenty of internal expansion room. The D20 is quite a bit faster, but that's no surprise as the D20 has a faster clocked processor with Turbo capabilities. While that Mac Pro is a good choice for a user in a Mac environment, if your business has standardized on Windows you really want to get a Windows workstation. For general workstation and high-end business tasks like photo and video editing, the current workstation Editors' Choice HP Z210 Small Form Factor Workstation ($2,173 direct, 4 stars) has a better price/performance ratio, but the Z210 is a single-CPU system and isn't expandable like the D20. The D20 is really made for the scientific/engineering/movie mastering crowds, so it's more of a case where you know that you need it. In that case, the D20 will serve you and your users well.

Whether it?s the serpentine, V-belt or fan belt (the belts on the outside of the engine), they all transmit power from the front of the engine to accessories that need to be driven, such as the air conditioning, the charging system and fans. * Hoses ? Radiator and heat hoses carry coolant to and from the engine, radiator and heater core.

Key items that affect the replacement interval of belts and hoses are:

* Age of vehicle * Corrosion of electrical components * High mileage * Oil contamination * Tension (too tight or too loose) * Broken clamps

Some of the typical symptoms of wear and tear are if you start to see fluid leaks on your garage floor, the dashboard light flashes, or you hear squeaking noises coming from under the hood during start-up, or while driving. Muslim leader: Algeria doesn't want gunman's body

This photo dated Tuesday, March, 27, 2012, and made available Wednesday, shows Mohamed Benallal Merah, the father of Mohamed Merah, in Algiers. Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Muslim extremist who says he trained in Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for killing paratroopers, Jewish children and a rabbi in a weeklong shooting rampage in the French city of Toulouse. Police shot him dead last week after a 32-hour standoff. Merah's father, who was estranged from his son and lives in Algeria, has reportedly said he wants to file a complaint for Mohamed's death. This photo dated Tuesday, March, 27, 2012, and made available Wednesday, shows Mohamed Benallal Merah, the father of Mohamed Merah, in Algiers. Police shot him dead last week after a 32-hour standoff. Merah's father, who was estranged from his son and lives in Algeria, has reportedly said he wants to file a complaint for Mohamed's death. (AP Photo)

TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? A young man who claimed responsibility for France's worst terror attacks in years will be buried Thursday in a Muslim cemetery near the southern city where he was killed in gunfight with police, religious leaders said.

Burying Mohamed Merah is a sensitive issue for both his native France and his father's native Algeria.

Merah told police he filmed himself killing three schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers in a spate of attacks earlier this month. Merah, who said he had links to al-Qaida, was shot in the head after a standoff with police last week.

His father wanted him buried in a family plot in Algeria. Merah's body was brought to the airport in the city of Toulouse on Thursday, and his mother had been expecting to accompany it to Algiers on a flight later in the day.

But Abdallah Zekri of the French Muslim Council, or CFCM, told The Associated Press that Algerian authorities refused for "reasons of public order." Zekri had been liaising with Algerian authorities in Toulouse.

Instead, Merah will be buried at the Muslim cemetery in Cornebarrieu, near Toulouse, Zekri said.

Meanwhile, police are searching for a third man suspected in helping prepare Merah's attacks.

Merah's brother was given preliminary charges of alleged complicity in preparing the killings, though his lawyer insists that Abdelkader Merah had no idea what his brother was plotting. Abdelkader Merah told investigators that a third man helped the Merah brothers steal a motorbike used later in the killings, two police officials said Thursday.

Merah did not give the name of the other man.

Also police have found a car found abandoned on a parking lot in a village in southern France, Saint-Papoul, that belongs to a man registered as living at the same Toulouse address as Mohamed Merah, the police officials said.

It's unclear whether the car owner and the alleged motorbike thief are the same person.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named.

The attacks were the worst terrorist attacks in France since the 1990s and have revived concerns about homegrown Islamist radicals carrying out violence. Merah traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan and said he received weapons training there.

French Muslims have worried about a backlash after Merah's attacks, and French leaders have urged the public not to equate Islam with terrorism.

But concerns about radical Islam are high, and the government on Thursday banned a string of international Muslim clerics from entering France for a conference of a fundamentalist Islamic group.

Skylar Laine Brings "Gunpowder and Lead" to American Idol

When is predictability a good thing? When it comes from Skylar Laine.

Faced with the challenge of selecting songs from their personal idols on American Idol this week, it wasn't hard to forecast that Laine would choose a track from Miranda Lambert. She's likely the contemporary artist with whom most viewers would compare Laine.

And Skylar did not disappoint on "Gunpowder and Lead," bringing her rocking country girl persona to the appropriate levels. She doesn't possess the same kind of voice as someone like Jessica Sanchez, but Laine owns the stage every time she steps on it, don't you agree?

Enjoy her latest now:

Guide to law career | green

In U.S. the lawyer is greatly in demand and the law profession is considered as one of the most prestigious position in U.S. Today, the legal professionals in U.S. earn lump sum amount even compared to the other professionals. The law student should actually pass many examinations before entering into the law field.
He should usually attain a law degree that is recognized by the American Bar Association. Before attaining a law degree he should complete his graduation in science, arts, commerce or business administration etc. He should obtain a graduate degree from any recognized institution beforehand. In order to seek admission in a reputed institute for studying law, he should pass a Law School Admission Test known as L.S.A.T. Usually he should at least secure B+ grade to secure admission in a reputed institute. He should compulsorily attend the 3-hour test. Then he can decide the area of specialization or the major subject that is to be chosen by him depending upon his skills and aim. In U.S. he can specialize in any of the related fields such as civil law, criminal law, family law, aviation law, airplane or marine law, trademark law, intellectual property rights law, immigration law, and many other fields because every branch in law is in demand today.
He can decide the area of law specialization before applying for an undergraduate degree, because he can study the related subject during his graduation study itself. If he wants to specialize in child custody or family laws, then he should preferably choose arts or humanities as his specialized subject when he is studying graduation. Then when he enters Law College, he can choose family law as his major subject and hence specialize in the related area.
The immigration law is greatly in demand in U.S. today many people from the other parts of the world are migrating to states and the laws have become very complicated. In U.S., if a student completes master?s degree after his Juris degree, then he can find several opportunities. Usually in U.S. after completing master?s degree, a law student applies for internship program for 3 to 5 years to gain experience in the related field. He may apply for internship for a law firm or governmental agencies depending upon his subject of specialization. The lawyer should obtain license before being admitted by the Bar. When the lawyer is admitted by the Bar, he can either commence his independent practice. If he has completed his degree in health and safety law, then he can complete his internship in most of the medical governmental organizations.
In u.s the lawyer can secure for a job in various spheres such as legal firms, corporate, trademark office, governmental agencies, legal bodies, policy making, legal research organizations, academic institutions etc. He can also become an established lawyer if he is well-versed with the legal matters. Senior overcomes cancer to graduate in May | ASU News | The ...

Economics senior Orry Night is graduating this May from the W.P. Carey School of Business. Night battled Hodgkin's lymphoma and went into remission last year. "I have grown exponentially from my experiences," he said. (Photo by Jessie Wardarski)

Orry Night was focused on one goal after battling with cancer in 2010 ? graduating from college.

The economics senior came to ASU in 2007 and instantly fell in love with the atmosphere.

The school provided Night the opportunity to meet friends, have a fun social life and attend a university with great athletic programs, he said.

During his sophomore year Night started experiencing chest pains, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite. Doctors attributed his symptoms to afflictions such as acid reflex and heartburn.

After living with these symptoms for about a year, Night was determined to see as many doctors as possible so he could finally find an answer.

?I went into the doctor?s office on a Thursday, I will never forget hearing the doctor?s words when he said I had Hodgkin?s lymphoma?,? he said.

Hodgkin?s lymphoma is a type of cancer originating in the immune system. This type of cancer is most prominent in young adults or in adults more than 55 years old, according to the American Cancer Society.

?I wanted to say everything that was on my mind to describe how I was feeling, but words wouldn?t come out,? he said.

Night weighed his treatment options for two weeks and decided to see a pediatric hematologist recommended by a family friend.

He was admitted into surgery a week after meeting his doctor and received a bone marrow biopsy, a lymph node biopsy and an implantable port to receive chemotherapy.

Night received rounds of chemotherapy from February to May 2010. He also underwent radiation treatments in June and July 2010.

?It was just another obstacle for me,? Night said. ?I was so determined to get back to school for fall semester.?

The cancer officially went into remission on August 13, 2010, and Night started the fall semester only five days later.

?It was surreal,? he said. ?I had to stop and take a breath to realize the magnitude of what was happening.?

Friends and family were the most important factor to help Night keep a positive attitude through his disease, Night said.

?I was blessed to have really great people in my life to get any dark thoughts out of my head,? Night said.

One friend from high school, Juan Torres, supported Night through his battle with cancer.

?I knew he needed someone there, and I was happy to be that person,? Torres said.

Despite a positive start to his remission, Night was hospitalized five weeks after the semester began because he caught pneumonia.

?My spirits were crushed after working so hard to get back,? Night said.

Night spent two weeks in a Scottsdale hospital, and the pneumonia was attributed to complications from radiation treatments.

His mom came to ASU, packed up her son?s things and waited for him to be released from the hospital.

Night was disappointed and felt defeated to return home to Fullerton, Calif., in October 2010.

?I had no intentions of coming back to ASU because I didn?t want to set myself up for failure again,? Night said.

Night had a change of heart in May 2011 after a friend convinced him to ?finish what (he) started? and go back to ASU.

He returned to ASU with the help of his academic adviser, though the word ?graduate? seemed so far away, Night said.

Night, now healthy, is on track to graduate in May with a bachelor?s degree in economics after eight semesters at ASU.

Because of his plight, Night volunteers at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society hoping to help the First Connections Program.

The First Connections Program pairs newly diagnosed patients with people who overcame a similar disease around the same age.

?Orry is extremely committed to the cause to find a cure for blood cancers,? said Jeff Zetino, patient services manager at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a nonprofit organization that aims to cure blood cancer through research, patient services and financial assistance.

Night said he was blessed to have the support through his cancer and is thankful that programs such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also provide help.

?If my story is able to help one person, than it is well worth it,? he said.

Pets used as Pawns in Domestic Violence | infonews.co.nz New ...

One in three women surveyed in a recent groundbreaking New Zealand study reported delaying leaving violent relationships because they feared their pets and other animals would be killed or tortured. Of these, one quarter said their children had witnessed violence against animals.

'Pets as Pawns' was commissioned by the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in partnership with Women's Refuge. It underlines the strong link between animal cruelty and domestic and family violence in New Zealand. The research also showed that 50% of women interviewed had witnessed animal cruelty as part of their experience of domestic violence.

"This research shows the urgent need for RNZSPCA and Women's Refuge to work together to find solutions to make families safer by enabling them to leave violent situations with their animals," says RNZSPCA National Chief Executive Robyn Kippenberger.

"In the past we have had an informal arrangement between some of our regional SPCA's and Women's Refuges, and the feedback we were getting from these collaborations led us to commission this research. The research has confirmed the need for Women's Refuge and the SPCA to work closely together to protect the women and animals who are suffering as a result of domestic violence."

"Our two organisations have agreed that we will develop a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure communication and cooperation at a local level," she said.

The study also found that SPCA staff and police needed to better understand the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence. Likewise, Refuge workers needed more support when women with animals needed to leave violent relationships. The study also suggests a funding programme should be developed to support animals in temporary accommodation, veterinary expenses and transport to this accommodation.

The research was funded by Lotteries Community Sector Research Fund and took place in 2011. The research included direct interviews with 30 refuge clients who had witnessed or were forced to take part in animal cruelty as part of family violence. SPCA stakeholders were also spoken with.

The latter part of the research involved surveying 203 Women's Refuge clients. Of these 203 women, 111 (55%) stated that animal cruelty was part of their experience of family violence as, at some point, either a family member or their partner had threatened to kill one of their pets, animals and/or farm animals. One third of the respondents also reported actual injury of death of the animal.

As a result, deciding when and how to leave a relationship that included cruelty to animals became more complex. Twenty-eight percent of women reported they would have left their abusive relationship earlier if they had not had a pet or animal. The length of time they stayed ranged from one week to 22 years with an average of two years.

The research also uncovered information about how children witnessed animal cruelty. Of the 159 research participants with children, a quarter reported that their children had witnessed someone in their family injure or kill a pet or animal. The research is available from the websites of the RNZSPCA and Women's Refuge.

"Disturbingly, many of the women reported that partners who had warnings or convictions around physical violence, would deliberately threaten or hurt pets as a way of controlling their family and make it easier to avoid reconviction," says Heather Henare, Chief Executive of Women's Refuge.

"In this way, pets and other animals become part of an arsenal of tricks abusers use to instil fear and control over their family. Some men will threaten to kill family pets if the women leaves, and in some cases women and children have witnessed extreme torture of pets or animals as part of the horror of domestic violence."

"The SPCA is already delivering presentations to intermediate school children throughout New Zealand teaching empathy and empowerment around kindness to animals and each other. But this research reveals that this is not enough to protect women who are attached to their pets from the perpetrators of domestic violence and we need to do more," says Ms Kippenberger.

Points for Women with a pet who is thinking of leaving a violent relationship

1. Violence towards animals is not acceptable, Even if you have pets, don't put off getting help! 2. Please call 0800 REFUGE to be connected to an advocate who will help you with a confidential safety plan for yourself, your children and your pets 3. To find a local refuge advocate you can also look under "W" in the White Pages for the number of your nearest women's refuge 4. Visit www.womensrefuge.org.nz

Media Factsheet

Other key findings from the research include: 1. There were two main categories for animal cruelty in domestic violence - a) cruelty to animals with and during the relationship and b) after leaving the relationship

2. Cruelty could be expressed in many ways. Some of the ways were as follows a) as normalised anger to animals that resulted in women and children fearing 'they would be next' b) perpetrators who get a perverse satisfaction from hurting animals

c) the harm might be without anger and this reinforced the unstable nature or timing of abuse to the animal or the threat to themselves d) animals would be used as a way to punish women and children for perceived misdemeanours e.g. you didn't clean your room so the cat will get burnt e) harming the animal to avoid conviction or further police attention f) implicating the women and children in the harm to induce guilt and control

3. Many women had the impression their pet would be euthanized if left with the SPCA while she escaped domestic violence, this is incorrect. RNZSPCA euthanasia practices should be widely circulated to remove public misconceptions.

4. Women are often locked into their relationships because they cannot find alternative accommodation (i.e. landlords who do not allow pets)

5. Research showed mechanisms need to be developed to assist women without transport or funds to surrender or place their animals in the SPCA's care

6. The animals most likely to be hurt are dogs (45%); cats (33%); cows (8%) and birds (6%)

7. Issues of ownership need to be investigated, as if the animal is registered in the abusers name, they will have precedence over the animal in current law

8. Any solution needs to be mindful that pets and farm animals are used as pawns in family violence.

Women aren't alone in the battle of the bulge.

"I've always fought my weight. Portion size is a battle; food is plentiful," said Myles Noel who is training for his next marathon at age 61.

The numbers are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of American adults (35.7 percent) are obese.?

The gender that seemed to be immune to the pressures of staying thin is now facing a reality check as they step on the scale. More men are taking their weight loss, health and fitness seriously. And the weight loss companies know it, launching campaigns that revolve around men.

Charles Barkley, former NBA basketball player and current analyst, is the pitchman for Weight Watchers for Men, making claims on the Weight Watchers website that he has lost 40 pounds.

It makes sense that WW would seek a famous athlete to represent their health and wellness program, and many men have joined the WW ranks.

Nutritsystem launched a men's program with Terry Bradshaw's face as the inspiration for weight loss. And Jenny Craig added a men's weight-loss program, calling it "Jenny for Men."?

While there is weight to be lost, there is also money to be made, and these companies understand individual programs targeted specifically to men open up their audience and clients.

"I think it's genius gearing it towards men," said Jennifer Burton, a registered dietitian at McConnell Heart Health Center in Columbus. She says men and women often lose weight differently.

"I think it is different. I definitely say things or suggest things differently for men than for women. Men are very black and white. You give them something to follow and typically they do," said Burton.

At Core Fitness Studio in Upper Arlington, personal trainers say they see more men who want to tone up.

"It's the mid-section. They start to see that gut start to hang over," said Russ Midlam, a personal trainer at Core. Midlam says weight-loss programs can be helpful in offering diet plans, goals, support and accountability.

"It's a huge industry, multi-billion dollar industry and there's a lot of really good programs out there, like the weight watchers programs is a good program. It provides a lot of accountability for people. They can take the guesswork out and have the support there," said Midlam who says having a balance between a healthy diet, cardio and weight training is important to taking off the pounds.

FTC wants new privacy framework: asks for simple controls, transparent policies

Image
There's plenty of people bothered by the dossiers of data companies like Facebook and Google can (and do) compile on their users, particularly in places across the pond. Now, the Federal Trade Commission has come up with a privacy framework to help address consumer concerns and provide companies with best practices to proliferate better privacy policies. This new plan is articulated in the FTC's recently released privacy report, and seeks to persuade companies to adopt a Privacy by Design ethos. Companies can do this by building in simplified privacy controls throughout product development and making info collection and practices transparent to users.

In order to meet these goals, the FTC came up with a five-pronged approach. First up is the widespread implementation of a Do Not Track system -- for which the W3C is currently creating an international standard -- that has already made its way into Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome to make it easy to opt out of targeted ads. Mobile services are also a priority, as the FTC wants concise, meaningful privacy disclosures to make them easy to digest when on smaller screens. Next, the FTC wants consumers to be able to easily find what personal info is held by data brokers, and is pushing those data brokers to create a centralized website to that end. ISPs, social networks, operating systems, and other so-called "large platform providers" are also under scrutiny for their ability to comprehensively track consumers, and the FTC will have a public workshop later this year to "further explore" issues related to that capability. Lastly, the Commission is working with the Department of Commerce to create business sector-specific codes of conduct, and pledges to continue to take action against companies that don't abide by their own policies.

In order to assuage fears that its framework puts too big of a financial burden on small businesses, the FTC made clear that it doesn't apply to companies that collect data from less than 5,000 customers and don't share that data with third parties. Sounds like a good plan, fellas, but we won't get too excited until we see the big boys actually implementing it.

Tebow the Jet: Celebrity backup meets media

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Tim Tebow got his first New York close-up Monday.

Speaking at news conference in the Jets field house, because the media crush was so great the session couldn't be hold in the team's normal press room, the headline-grabbing New York backup QB went out of his way to play down any conflict between himself and starter Mark Sanchez.

"Me and Mark have a great relationship," Tebow said. "We've been friends past three years and have already texted back and forth. We are going to have a great working relationship and I think we'll have a lot of fun together."

Acquired last Wednesday from Denver, the exciting but flawed quarterback is coming off a season of incredible comebacks with the Broncos. The Jets are hoping he has more surprises left in him.

Tebow's new club threw him a quick challenge on Monday, sending him out alone to take questions at what was probably the biggest news conference ever for a second-string NFL player. Tebow stayed composed, answering all the queries with an upbeat delivery for more than half an hour.

Coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson were not in the building. They were down at the NFL meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., far away from the wild scene at the team's headquarters.

While Ryan and Tannenbaum insist Sanchez is entrenched as the first-string quarterback, Tebow will also see plenty of time on the field and certainly much more of the spotlight.

Ryan suggested on Sunday that Tebow could be used at a position other than quarterback. He kept referring to Tebow as a "football player," his ability not limited to quarterback.

"I don't see Tim just holding a clipboard," Ryan told a group of reporters while in Florida for a meeting of NFL team owners. "He's going to be playing for us. There is no doubt."

Ryan added: "There won't be a better wildcat quarterback in the game. Is that his only role? I don't believe that. We'll see."

Tebow said first and foremost he's a quarterback, and that's his hope and dream, but "however I can help the team, I am open to it."

The newest Jet has already helped his team get some attention. While the club claims the trade for Tebow was a football-related move, it was also marketing gold as the polarizing QB has occupied the back ? and, in some cases, the front ? pages of the New York-area tabloids. And that's just weeks after the Giants won their second Super Bowl in four years.

Legions of fans have been snatching up Tebow's green and white No. 15 jersey. The famed Carnegie Deli in Manhattan already has a sandwich named after him, and Jockey has a digital billboard ad outside the Lincoln Tunnel ? on the New Jersey side ? with the underwear company saying it supports "Tebow & New York."

It's been a whirlwind of a few weeks for Tebow, who just last month was declared Denver's starting quarterback going into this summer by John Elway. Not long after that, Peyton Manning was suddenly in town and Tebow was told he could get traded.

So much for "Timsanity" in Denver. Well, it has hit Broadway in full force, making "Linsanity" and the New York Knicks' sensational Jeremy Lin seem like a distant memory.

Manning was introduced as the Broncos' newest quarterback last Tuesday, and just over 24 hours later, Tebow was on the move, surprisingly headed to New York.

And then, he wasn't.

A snag in the deal held things up between the Jets and Broncos, the delay centered on a salary advance due Tebow. Jacksonville, once considered one of the favorites to land their hometown star, jumped back in the hunt. But eight hours later, the Jets finally completed the trade, agreeing to pay half of the $5 million Denver owed Tebow. There was yet one more delay before the trade became official, as a technicality required Tebow to sign a rewritten contract which kept him on the Broncos' salary cap until Saturday afternoon.

But now Tebow is here, a member of the Jets. And they intend to make things work with him and Sanchez, who was given a contract extension that included $20.5 million guaranteed less than two weeks ago. He hasn't commented publicly on the deal yet, but training camp up in quaint Cortland, N.Y., might be a pretty hot spot ? especially if Sanchez struggles and restless fans push for more Tebow, creating a quarterback controversy that could last all season.

Jets fans have been decidedly mixed on the trade, with many wondering why the team would add a monster distraction to a locker room that had serious issues last season and was partly to blame for an 8-8 finish. Sanchez's leadership and confidence were questioned by some players, speaking anonymously in newspapers reports, and the addition of Tebow could cut into the starting quarterback's ability to regain the room.

Joe Namath ripped the trade, calling it "a publicity stunt," and cornerback Antonio Cromartie wondered on Twitter why the Jets would even need a guy like Tebow. He later reversed course, saying he supported Tebow and the team, but there have been plenty of other critics who have made it clear that they think the Jets made the wrong move.

While Tebow took Denver from 1-4 to AFC West champions last season, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner hit fewer than 50 percent of his passes and often seemed more comfortable running than passing. Throw in Tebow's public displays of faith ? he is a devout Christian ? and he quickly has become a player who triggers a strong reaction from fans.

But whether anyone likes it or not, Tebow is part the New York sports scene. Now the Jets must figure out how to make it a winning addition.

(AP) ? Weary winner Venus Williams stood near the net swatting souvenir balls to cheering fans, but a marathon match had taken its toll, and one attempt didn't even reach the stands.

Williams had already expended all of her energy, erasing a match point and outlasting Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) in Sunday's third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.

Her career comeback now includes a comeback. Williams is playing in her first tournament since withdrawing from the U.S. Open last August after being diagnosed with a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease.

The three-set victory was her second in less than 48 hours, and took nearly three hours.

"I just kept coming back," Williams said. "I tried not to let anything discourage me."

Wozniak served for the match at 5-4 in the final set, but dumped a forehand in the net when she had a match point. Talking later about the situation, Williams claimed to be unaware Wozniak had been so close to victory.

"She had match point?" Williams said. "Oh no. Thank God I'm oblivious to the score a lot of times."

The tiebreaker swung Williams' way when she smacked an overhead that clipped the net cord before landing softly for a winner and a 4-2 lead. On the final point, she somehow found the strength to whack a 119-mph service winner.

"That's the serve I wanted ? just a big one to hopefully force the issue," Williams said. "Thank God it went in. Wow."

She'll need to recover quickly for a fourth-round match Monday night against No. 15-seeded Ana Ivanovic, who beat No. 20 Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 7-6 (2).

No. 4-seeded Andy Murray, the 2009 champion, advanced in a walkover when Milos Raonic withdrew because of a sprained right ankle. Raonic said he doesn't believe the injury is serious.

Grigor Dimitrov advanced by upsetting No. 7 Tomas Berdych 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The 20-year-old Dimitrov improved to 1-9 against top 10 players.

No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic beat No. 18 Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

In other women's play, wild card Garbine Muguruza Blanco eliminated No. 24 Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (6). No. 7 Marion Bartoli eliminated Simona Halep 6-4, 7-6, (6).

On a sweltering spring afternoon, Williams looked lethargic at the outset, struggled with an erratic forehand and kept falling behind. She played with straps on her right ankle and right calf, and often seemed a step late to the ball.

"Wake up, Venus!" a fan shouted in the second set. Younger sister Serena, who plays her fourth-round match Monday, watched solemnly from the club section of the stadium.

"I didn't feel that great, and I was kind of starting to panic," Venus said. "I needed to calm down and try to figure out a strategy that was going to work a little better than what I was doing at the moment."

She managed to pull even after two sets, then fell behind 4-2 in the third set and looked increasingly weary. During one changeover she hung her head for 15 seconds before slowly lifting it to take sips from two drink bottles.

Wozniak looked fresher, but the wild card from Canada couldn't serve out the match. Instead, the opportunity unnerved her. She hit consecutive double-faults and committed unforced errors on the game's final three points, which made it 5-all.

Play continued for another half hour before another match point, this one held by Williams. After her service winner clinched the victory, she managed to raise both fists and muster a smile.

A former No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams is ranked No. 134 and needed a wild card to enter the tournament. She's trying to improve her ranking enough in the coming weeks to qualify for the London Olympics.

"Whenever things look bleak, I think about the Olympics," Williams said. "That keeps me motivated."
